I have a chance to buy an excellent cond. Randall XL 4x12" with vintage 30's local and wondered if they are any good. I have a Bogner Goldfinger 2x12" cab and a Marshall AX but need something with vintage 30's to use with my Fortin Marshall.
Thanks for any input.

What he said!

I have the angled top cab and the MTS equivalent bottom cab (straight sides)...the bottom cab I kept over cabs from Mesa and ENGL...it sounds sweet.

I just picked up a couple MTS cabs which are really about the same, and they fucking kick ass!!!

I guess I'll be the naysayer here :D. I think there are better choices out there. A friend of mine has one and just plugging into it sounds fine. When compared directly to a few other cabs it lacked clarity & tightness. He was pretty pissed off when the cheaper back up cab he picked up ended smoking his Randall. Unless it's a steal of a price I'd pass. All IMO of course

The cab is about 3 to 4 years old and in good condition. He wants $275.00

If it has Celestion v30s then hell yeah...since 4 of those are probably worth more than that used...no brainer.

I concur!

Is it local or are you going to have to get it shipped?

It's local. I'm going to check it out and make sure the speakers are what he says.

Was it the XL cab? every XL I've plugged into would smoke most Mesa cabs, My Warhead cab smoked the VHT cab I HAD... The XXL cabs are great as well.

The 2 I just picked up are older versions and loaded with V30s,and for 500 bucks it was allllll goood, and yes they tore up the mesa cab,but I was mainly after the speakers and after playing them,I decided to keep them as one....really pretty good cabs

Yeah, it's an XL. Now I'm not slagging it & trying to say it's crap. His cab isn't bad & it's definitely capable of putting out good tones. It just seemed to have a blanket over it and sound more congested when compared to the other cabs. I would've expected more projection and presence. Who knows, maybe it's just his Randall....

The cabs I heard in comparison were a USA Diezel, a Kerry Wright, and some 15 year old ENGL. All the cabs were rear loaded w/V30s. I've never played a VHT cab. I haven't been keen on Mesa cabs in while myself either.

That ENGL was the backup I mentioned. He picked it up for like $300. I don't know what model it is, but that thing has tone for days. I'd give my left nut for that cab

Edit: Actually the ENGL was $200. Makes me want to vomit

Some amps work better with certain cabs than others. Not the cabs fault in most cases.

I love mine. I run mine with V30 x H30. its killer. Of all my cabs I owned a while back, Ive only held on to my radall Xl and my recto cab. They are at oposite ends of the spectrum from each other. Its cool. They cover a lot of ground between the 2. The XL has a very tight lowend and lots of clarity. Very crunchy too.

Bring a screw gun and save yourself a half an hour of your life.

I've got an XXL, great cab, not an Afterburner though.

thats what keeps happening to me. i keep buying cabs for a made in england celestion speaker collection for my studio in progress, and whatever cabinet it be, it sounds so good. lol. so i keep them intact. it happened with an 80's peavey cab, and a much older randall cab. each one of those cabinets cost me what one made in england celestion of its kind was worth. i have like eight 4x12"s at the moment and two 2x12"'s at the moment
