Are you using all your modules?

So I've got an M4 Preamp with the T/D, BMann, VOX, and COD modules.

The Vox is my fav followed by the Bmann. I get all the distortion I need out of the b channels of both those mods and don't have any overdrive or distortion pedals (I am using a g-system).

I do use the T/D in live settings but really only because it there. The way I have it set up, my B channel T/D and A Channel BMann are almost identical. I prefer the clean tones I get out of the VOX A channel the to T/D. On a side not when I first got the T/D it seemed saturated in reverb so much that I was sure I was going to return it but now I am so used to it I don't even hear it.

I have never used the COD in a live setting and so far cannot stand the tone...it is EQ'd with too much mid for my liking. I like how hot it is but can't shake the mids no matter how hard I try. I bought the COD thinking I need something high gain but not crazy metal gain, etc. I keep trying to find good clips of the other heavy distortion modules to replace the COD but they are all unimpressive except for the SL2x (which is Ironic since its really high gain and not my style). To be fair, the SL2x tones I like are with the volume dialed down like the tones at 2:10 into this video...

The bottom line is I could make do with the VOX and BMann and not miss the others....How bout you?

My solution ... I am considering ditching the COD and doubling up on the VOX mod so I have 4 different channels with 2 different EQ settings. Plan B is ditch the M4 and buy an E2 when it comes out. I actually wanted on e from the get go but was not willing to wait (forever) for it to finally be released...thus I use 2.5 modules out of 4.

Thoughts?

There's no harm in using 2 of your favorite module. I know some guys around here that do that... *cough cough* Eric... :D

Currently, there's some modules that I use ALL the time, and others that I don't, so I'm probably going to sell some to recoup some cash. But it was worth buying them, trying them out, and living with them for a while, to really decide on what tone I wanted.

I hardly ever use my T/D module anymore. I use the rest. I love the VX and SL. So much so that I have been pondering paring down everything to the Mod50 and VX and SL. But I know I would miss the EG5 (even though lately I have been wanting a more "round" high gain module).

Then again, I really want to grab a BMan, too, so maybe I should just keep the M4. It's all very fluid... :)

Yeah yeah.....:) I don't really have any that are the same anymore at least! :)

I use some more than others too. On the COD, the COD does really well w/ 6L6 or 6550 power tubes. Relaxes the mids a bit. It definitely has a mid-range thing going....which some love or hate.

You should try others like the SL out ..

I personally couldn't live without 4-5...Dual DLX, EG5, VX, EG34X. All quite different. I don't have a SL2X anymore..as the EG34X is the tone I really am gravitating for ...for marshall stuff...and I really don't need my Twin anymore either. So I know my Twin is going up for sale soon. And I do have a SL2 that I need to move.

But, I really am glad I don't need to sell any others. DLX, VX, EG34X, EG5, BMAN, COD, single channel Hilly-modded XTC, and the "Mystery Module" is all I really want / need. Reason I wouldn't sell any of them, is they are a lot of the amps I love the tone of...but don't need all the time...like the DLX or VX. I love the tone...but I dont see myself having a dedicated DLX or VX in my amp arsenal. COD is there also. I love that thing...But I don't need that tone all the time. But from time to time, I want that SRV type of tone...and man...does it do it in spades. Single coils + 6550s in a Mod50 make that COD scream! :)

Eric - what is the EG34X - is this modded or the same thing as a 3/4?

I think a good marshall ryhtm sound would round me out, even if I did not use it to often. Right now I have no confidence in the COD tone for my application. I am not a strat fan/player either so maybe that has soemthing to do with it, who knows.

The EG34X is the EG34 with the "X" mod like on the SL2, plus a treble bleed cap change. The EG34X is my favorite higher gain Marshall tones. If you want a lower-mid gain Marshall rhythm, go for the SL! :)

Here is a youtube clip w/ the EG34X in there...as well as other modules.

I was going to recommend the EG3/4X module. I think you would probably like it.

I ditched my EG5 for an EG3. I much prefer the darkness and lower gain. Makes way more sense to have a single channel mod for rhythm. EG5 was too bright and I did not like channel B. BMAN and VX are musts for clean and mid gain. Both have their own thing going on for sure. I use the COD for leads both A and B channel and it cuts like a knife. Absolutely gorgeous with P90's.

It took a long time for me to get into the COD..and now I'm addicted....it took a speaker change for me to love it....I run it into my ET-65/G12K85 cab and it's awesome.

As for the rest of the modules...I've had 'em all...but honestly I rarely play any of 'em but the EG3/4..I wish I still had my Vx and the Friedman C45/BE though.

Sl2 is by far my favorite...thick and smooth, Bruce's take on the Marshall tones of the 80s and 90s. Hated the SL2X and the EG3/4X seems more gainy than I need. I always end up back with the SL2. I love how thick and warm it is. I use the SL for clean and Plexi tones. Channel A makes a great clean.

I'm now running 2 VX mods, a Bman, and a T/D. Love it. Could possibly to two VX and two Bman's and love it even more.
