Attenuators?

can you guys recommend me a good one that won't suck up my tone?

i dont think peter recommends using attenuators with diezels - i seem to remember reading that in another thread recently ;)
although if you must use one the THD's are supposedly very good...

really ? why doesn't peter recommend it

do you have that post?

I also remember Peter writing that somewhere here. As far as I remember he said using the master volume is just as good as using a attenuator and won't wear out the power amp tubes so fast.
If you really want the sound of a cranked up amp you've got to do so because not only the power amp is involved in it but also the speakers and cab. Especially a Vintage 30 sound a lot different if it is really pushed.

+1 to what was said so far with the exception of the THD recommendation - I fell for that too and I was happy with the Hotplate for like 10 minutes. Then I took it out of the chain, turned the volume down again on the amp and loved the sound of the amp without the THD even more.

Attenuators are somewhat OK if you use them with the low settings. They always DO suck your tone, but I think the question here is that where do you use it and when.

I am pretty damn sure that the über drunken headbangers or 80+ years old grandmas do not hear a difference wether you use an attenuator or not. In a recording studio it is a completely different situation. Very often you cannot use your power amp fully driven in a gig situation in order to manage the stage volumes. Thus, there is not much options if you desire to achieve the pushed power amp sound.

Personally, when using one head with the two cabinets I use 4 Ohm THD HotPlate at gigs or at rehearsals, but not when recording. When using only one cab (2x12") the attenuator is not often required. And yes, I do like the sound of a VH4 pushed with an attenuator more than the sound of a smothered VH4 without an attenuator.

Please note that these are my individual opinions and may well vary from the ones that you have. So, please, my fellow forumites, do not take my words as a declaration of war. ;)

Why does no one listen?

I have tried an attenuator, and the best way to get good results out of your Einstein is to crank the master all the way up and use the channel volume control as an "attenuator", it works better than using an outboard device.

There really is no reason to use an attenuator if your amp has a decent master volume.

Well man, cranking the master and controlling the volume knob only works for me in the clean ch. when I do this with ch2 or ch1 m3, it sound VERY thin and harsh...........like if the mids/treble/presence were maxed, and the bass/deep was down completely.

Bad Cat came out with an attenuator called The Leash. It is supposed to be amasing. id try one out if i got a chance.

The thing with the master versus the channel volume is a finicky beast. The channel volume increases the volume into the preamp which gives you gain etc, but the master does the same with the power amp. I thought the Herbert was good enough without an attenuator, but i cannot speak for the Einstein.

Also check out a Palmer speaker simulator, or use an ISO Cab.

Diezel honestly has the best master volume of any amp I've ever played. If that's not working well enough, you're missing the added dynamic of the cabinet pushing air. Unfortunately, no attenuator will solve that.

yeah, I e-mails a company that makes Iso cabs, I'm waiting for a response on how much would it cost me because they're located in the U.S.

Do you know of someone in Europe that makes Iso cabs?

At least the AxeTrak isocabs are available in Europe, while not being European made. There are few European companies that produce isolation cabinets -- I just wish I would remember their name. I think one of them was Italian and another was German.

Goodness....if there is one thing I can recommend is NOT to buy one of those. He charges far too much for what you get. IT basically makes your Diezel sound like a 6 inch car stereo speaker.

I went with a Grendel Deadroom for mine. http://www.grendelsound.com/ It's so well built and you have the option of putting your own speaker into it. I put a Diezel Emminence into mine and it sounds beautiful! I've have to load up a few clips when I get some time.

Yep. I did not recommend buying the Axetrak. I just mentioned that it is available. However, I don't think that it is "the ultimate crap from the end of the world" -product and will suite some people's needs.

The Grendel Deadroom seems very good. I wonder what will their price be here in Europe and especially when comparing to the price of making such a cabinet by yourself. My reference here being my friend who is a case builder and is expanding his product range to road-ready speaker cabinets. So far the demo units have been very successful. One thing on the 'to do' -list is a long planned isolation cabinet, which proto unit will see daylight in summer (I believe).

BTW, for what purpose you are looking the iso cab for?
Is the purpose of utilization:
A) Home recording
B) Practicing
C) Paper weight
D) Door blocker
E) Other, specify ___________________

the bad cat leash rocks! there is one in stock at riks music in knoxville. i have played with it multiple times, granted it was on a bad cat as i just dont think diezels need one, and hell i play the 180 watt beast! lol just my 2 cents
