I've read some reviews and such on this mic and think I may like it for live use. I am running my Bad cat/Splawn 4x12 miced with a 57, which sounds great. I was thinking of using an I5 on my VHT 100/cl/D412 cab. this is my live rig that I run in stereo(partially wet/dry). the VHT obviously delivers my tight more bass heavy sound.

what are your thoughts on this mic in a live situation?

Double-micing live, you're gonna have to pay attention to phase issues, just a heads up.

thin??? kinda the opposite of what I expected from everything I read!

1 mic on each cab, I've not run into phase issues.

its kinda thin, but its got good high mid response

It sounds thicker than the SM57, but for ALOT of thickness you'd want a Sennheisser 421 or 609. If money is no object then a good condensor mic that can handle high SPL can get very thick tones as well.

I use an I5 alot....there is a preety big lower mid scoop built in. The bass and highs are somewhat accentuated. I have to use it with something else, usually either a 57 or 609. I really don't care for the 609 by itself either. The I5/609 mixes pretty well though. I dual mic live almost all the time, each on a different speaker. Sounds pretty fat that way!

hmmm. thanks for the responses guys.

thicker than a 57 sounds good.
I really want to limit things to 1 mic per cab though. the 609 seemingly has accentuated highs in my experience and I haven't liked it by itself. though I haven't really played with mic position with the 609 either - its always been miced up by a sound guy and occassionally used in the studio - which is a different ball game too when you're mixing 2-3 different mics together. I'd like the punchiness and clarity of the VHT to come through without the highs being harsh at all...I want them there clarity wise but just want them to be smooth I guess.

I suppose my best bet would be to just buy one and mic things up and record and see how it all sits. if it works, great if not, try something else.

I can't say I'd ever want to hear "way thicker" than an SM57 at pretty much every venue I've ever been too. Most have enough bass issues as it is.

its not that I'm really looking for "way thicker" than a 57, I was kinda looking for smoother highs and high mids. I haven't experimented with mic positioning on the VHT a whole lot, so it may be something I can do in that respect too.

I am trying to have on hand the mics I have preference to for micing at shows(including my vocal mic), so I have consistancy. I run into(at smaller clubs mostly) - "do both cabs have to be miced?" by guys that don't wanna deal with it sometimes. most of the time we have our own sound guy so its not usually an issue. but once in awhile its something I need to deal with. I ask about the I5, cause I haven't used it before. if it would benefit my sound live, I wanna explore the option rather than rely on the old "standards".

Yeah, I know, it was sort of a general statement in reference to what others were saying.

I can understand your issues with it. Personally, I don't care too much for an SM57 by itself. I like to use it with other mics that fill out the high end a bit better.

in general, the 57 works great for me. I can throw it just about anywhere in front of my bad cat/splawn and it sounds great. the VHT is a little more picky it seems. I want to work with one of the sound guys we use and figure out which mic and positioning capture the amp the best and what delivers it the best in the full band mix.
