Avoiding potential tourmaster problems

Hi,

I'm considering picking up a used tourmaster 4100. I'm a little wary, because I've read about a bunch o very expensive transformer problems, or that the amps have been plagued with problems.

I guess I'm asking whether there's any way to mitigate potential issues on a currently working amp. (If all the problems were caused by a bad run of tubes, Etc).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

I've searched the forum, but haven't found much on specifics. I'll try again, I suppose. I'm on a mobile device, so it's possible I'm missing something.

There are plenty of comments on a variety of problems....

I would not get one.

if you're going to, make sure the serial# begins with "M" and then has the rest of the serial #

as in Mxxxxxxxxx

those are the ones that have the upgraded power tranny and the "m" mods for tighter bass, more gain, and tamed high end.

This would be the best way to avoid the problems ..yes

I had one for years. No significant issues. Fuse blew once, and I had to replace the footswitch once because I stomped on it so hard, but I figure those things could happen with any amp.

As your attorney, I would advice against.

Sorry Yeti, I couldn't resist ..

Sad but true

I do agree that, if you get a used one, make sure it has the M mod. New ones will have that. The only serious issue I ever had with mine was that it was so heavy. That's why I eventually got rid of it, but I did use it as my only amp for 4 years.

i traded an amp for mine. it didnt have the M mod. it's a 2008 early version. i had no clue.

10 months after i got it, it quit working out of no where. it took egnater forever to send me a new tranny also. i wont go into all of that, it's documented here somewhere.

somewhere in the first year i had it, the reverb quit working. i had to buy a new reverb tranny for 35 bux. not really a big deal, butthe way egnater does "direct" business is about as antiquated as it gets. You have to fax your info, RA#, address, part#, CC#, exp date and ccv code over to them. or, at least it was in 2011.

i've said before, i LOVE the versatility of the amp, and the tone is great too..in a band setting, it cuts like i knife. and i used it a lot live since i installed the tranny myself. i also learned a bit about tube amps, mods, repairs (still want to learn more and have been learning more) and this amp going down was the springboard for all of that thirst. heres where it started: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=94974

now i run it in stereo with my 5150, in a w/d/d/w rig and its retarded sounding.

I had a bad tranny with a pre modified power tranny. Great amp- expensive tube Change-lots of glass in the tourmaster

Ive had mine for 3yrs. No problems.
Great amp. Lots of great sounds. Its one amp I will keep.
I do gig with it.

Well, I've had mine for two years now and it died... looks like the power tranny as the main fuse blows immediately at power on. I've attempted to contact egnater through their support contact page... twice and no response. Support calls in the daytime go to voicemail. Seems like parts of their website haven't been updated in two years as well... Now my amp does NOT have an M in the serial (at least the sticker I think is the serial number anyway) and I hope they will replace it free of charge and I no longer have the receipt but I'm not holding my breadth... I'm a little suspect as to the viability, reliability and commitment to quality and commitment to non-promo users of egnater at this point.....

YUCK
FUCK
THAT SUCKS.

dude, i know the feeling. i will try to help you as best i can. right now, i believe they are all out of office for "the jewish holiday". at least thats the reply mail i get back when i email them.

i would also assume since your serial# doesn't have an M in it that it's the old first run style.

here's what to do. wait til october 1. call the customer service line. tell them you have an original tourmaster that you bought, serial#, and tell him you tested it.

first, since you have time, refer to this video....some of it is rudimentary, but, you could learn something.
test your amp the way they do. it's easy. set your power grid to full power.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSl-l9aWDHw

if you dont wanna watch it, the steps are:

turn the power and standby switches to OFF
unplug the amp
remove the 4 LARGE power tubes
replace the blown fuse above the plug receptacle
plug the amp back in
turn the power on, but leave the standby in "standby"

if the jewel light fires up, you probably have a bad tube. if not, something internal, which, we suspect already is the output tranny.
you CAN test that, here's the directions....http://www.geofex.com/ampdbug/outtrans.htm

if you determine it's a blown tube, all the better!

again, im really sorry to hear you have this issue...it sux...hang in there, be patient and keep on em!

George

Ripsix and Yeti,

I'm going through the same exact issue as you with my Tourmaster. I feel your pain...see my post "Toumaster Power Tranny: Horrible customer Service"

I'm hoping Bruce himself will step up to the plate to help make this right.
