Hey guys,

Just wondering if any of you have tried or own the AXE FX2 and use it with the VH4? I hear some people say it sucks some tone out of your amp and wanted to know what you guys have to say. Im considering to buy it if its transparent with the VH4. I want to use it only for extra effects and not for the amp and cab simulations. Also is it quiet or will you hear humming and buzzing?

Thanks

Have a look on the Fractal forum for different users' accounts of how they run their 4CM setups.

I run an Axe II with a Marshall JVM in 4CM, but with the Axe II setup with an RJM Effect Gizmo so i can switch the front and post effects out of the signal path when they're not in use. The amp's dry signal goes into a Mini Line Mixer, where the Axe II's post fx are mixed in parallel. This is a killer setup.

I think that with any tube amp, to run it permanently through two rounds of ADA conversion seems like a waste of tone. The Axe II works amazingly well in 4CM but it is well known that Output 2 (the Output that feeds into the front of the amp in a typical 4CM scenario) is very hissy in stock form with several amps due to it being wideband by design. The Axe II can be modified to eliminate most of the hiss...i had the mod done by G66, the European Distributor, and it works great.

The Axe II is actually very transparent..so if you don't mind the ADA conversion then you can easily run it in 4CM without a true bypass switching system.

The other issue is tackling the potential ground loops that will occur (these can be eliminated by using humbuster cables if not using a switching system, or with ground lift cables if the switching system is used).

Any Diezel head with the Axe II in 4CM would sound killer, especially with some kind of true bypass switcher. Hope this helps!

That's a huge waste of money to use an Axe II as an fx only unit. I'd check out TC or Eventide for that.

Fair point but not necessarily. If you do the math and approach the Axe II as containing a massive collection of stomp boxes and rack units in a 2U space, then it actually does make economic sense. If you do make use of the modelling for recording then it's a no brainer.

The TC setup would make sense if you don't use any modelling sounds, but the equivalent Eventide setup would almost cost the same (Eclipse is limited to mono for 4CM so this would go in the fx loop...and you would need all the Factor stomp boxes too in front of the amp to match the possible scenarios that the Axe II can pull off in 4CM). The top of the line Eventide rack Harmonizers are also way more expensive than the Axe II

Whatever works.

Meh. I tried it with the Ultra and A2 and I can't say I'd play my Diezels in a 4CM format for good. No dice. Diezels are just too fine a tone to meddle with going ADA. And honestly, I didn't like it with the Axe, but I do like my Diezel with a very few select stomps both up front and looped. I find the Diezels need the least of effects out of any amp, but of course IMHO and YMMV.

I agree with Mo here. Less is more with the Diezel's.

I tried my Axe in 4CM with my Diezel's and didn't like it as much as when I just used it in the loop. Then a couple stomps out front and boom, excellent tones, no problems.

I will suggest the Ultra for this use, mainly because it's cheaper at this point and will do all the effects with no problem. Since you are not using the amp and cab models, there is plenty of CPU in the Ultra. That may go for the standard as well, and it's even cheaper.

if you are set on 4CM, then the previous post is also a good option.

Have fun, at least you already made the best choice in your Diezel

Thanks a lot for all the info guys.

Really appreciate it. I guess Ill try to make a decision really soon. I actually bought a TC Electronic G Major 2 in the past, and at the same time I had a Mesa Triple Rectifier and when I hooked them both up, my distortion tone from the head was totally sucked out and made my amp sound terrible, so I returned the G Major 2. I still use 10 stomp boxes with my VH4 and what I was thinking was either going back to a good rack effects unit or buy an RJM Effect Gizmo which has 12 loops and just put all my pedals in drawers. Still trying to figure out what Im gonna do but thanks again for all the help!

Hey Ventura,

Thanks. I think I decided that Im going to do that too. Its super easy to program the RJM with 10 presets/bank on my GCP too!
