I recently got an LTD EC-400VF that I found used locally for pretty cheap. I initially got it thinking "this would make a great beater guitar", but I ended up loving it. It rings out acoustlcally, and it plays much better than my Gibson, IMO, with the thinner neck and the jumbo frets.

That guitar came with a JB/'59 set stock. When I first got it, I initially liked it, but didn't love it. I thought it was lacking power and agression. It sounded good, but not great, because I kept comparing it to my other two guitars: Les Paul with a 500T and SH-6N and Strat with a Nazgul and SDS-1.

It is a cheapie guitar, so I didn't wanna drop a lot of money on it. I sold the stock JB, found a cheap Duncan Custom, and I dropped it in. Initial impressions was it's good, but is it that much better than the JB? I tweaked the pickup height, polepiece height, I even tried swapping an oversized Ceramic in it. No luck. I liked it better stock. What I decided to do is disconnect the tone knob altogether and swap the pots for 1Meg to get that extra bit of attack and aggression. Worked out great, but the one thing that I couldn't get rid of was the thuddy low-end. That isn't entirely the pickup's fault. The guitar itself sounds like that to an extent, and it doesn't help that I'm tuning to Drop C and that low C is a 59 gauge. But it is undeniable that the Custom has a bigger low-end than the JB.

I found a limited edition CS JB handwound by MJ locally. All the fancy stuff. I offered a Wylde Overdrive pedal and some cash for it, and I got it. Dropped it into the guitar with the 1Meg volume pot, no tone, and I immediately loved it! The attack is a bit softer compared to the Custom. We'll see how I get along with that in the future, but the whole EQ of the pickup is just "right", especially considering what other pickups I'm using. The mids are nice and cutting. The low-end is not as overbearing as the Custom, but it's not thin either because there is some lower mid chunk in there. It's just a great-sounding pickup.

I kinda felt like a dumbass for not attempting to tweak the stock JB to start with. I could've remoded the cover, tried different value pots, even droppin in a different magnet. But I mean, this other JB is as "objective" upgrade from the stock production JB as it's going to get. In the end, I think it worked out, and I don't really feel bad about trying the Custom (I think I might actually drop it into the Strat because I kinda like it better than the Nazgul).

Anyways, that's my story. I came full circle back to the JB, which has always been one of those those pickups that are "home" for me. :)

Very cool, mine also came stock with that set buy I couldn't gel with it so replaced then with the Green Magic set by Seymour Duncan. Just recently I put the JoBo Blonde Dot set in it and still fooling around with the heights to see what tones I can get out of them. So far I really the sensitivity of the Job set.

Anyways, glad you're happy, cheers!

It's funny, my next guitar is going to be an Ltd and going with a JB as well. Just works!!

I was this close to just getting a '59B to make the guitar have the full '59 set, but this JB showed up, and I've never tried CS Duncans. I loved the '59 in the past, but I kinda feared that it would make the guitar too different from my others. I like PAF types for Metal, but I feared it just wouldn't work without so MAJOR tweakind compared to my other guitars.

Make sure you play around with pot values if you're not initially 100% happy with the pickup but still feel like it has redeeming qualities. I don't regret having tried the Custom and landing on a CS JB, but I bet the stock JB would've made me happy as well had I tweaked around it a bit.

I bet a JB on an SG would kill! I feel like SG's naturally spanky nature would offset the slight softness to the attack JB's sometimes can have.
I think that’s accurate . What I’m surprised about is that it can do down tuned metal really good with this combo

That's awesome that you got a MJ set! I pulled these 80s ones out of a 70s epiphone genesis with a broken headstock I got a few years ago at a pawnshop for like $20.

Threw a JB into the bridge of my Ibanez Prestige.....LOVE IT!

Awesome pickups that cover a lot of ground.....imho.
I used to have an RGA121 with a JB in it as well. That was actually the first time I tried a JB. That guitar made every pickup I had in it sound great, though.

Oh, I didn't get the set. The guy also had a CS '59, but my guitar already has a production '59 stock in there that I kinda want to change, so I want to do some more research before replacing it.

Honestly, I kinda like it. I just wished it was a tad hotter, but I also don't feel a rush to change it since I don't use the neck pickup all that much.

Those pickups you got there are awesome! I'd love to try an old original JB to see what they're all about.

I remember I first got the JB years ago because I really liked the tone on Anthems of Rebellion. It was one of the first passives that I fell in love with. Before that, I was EMG 81 or death, LOL. The Duncan Distortion was the other passive that I loved at the time. But that one is very close to just being a JB with a ceramic magnet.

I actually put the JB in a cheap squier bronco bass :ROFLMAO:

Congrats. Those custom shop JBs are so much better than newer stock ones. It’s sad that the CS ones are essentially what used to be stock specs and materials as used in the early 80’s examples.

I sold off that stock JB, so I never got to A/B them. I'm really curious as to how they compare. My initial impressions is this one sounded like a really good JB, but I have no idea what's different in it.

Regarding the construction, this has butyrate bobbins, but I'm not sure how that impacts the sound if at all. I do notice the potting is lighter on this compared to the stock one. The magnet on this one is roughcast Alnico, though. So I'm pretty sure that has an impact on sound as well.

I wish I had kept the original stock one, to be honest.

Love the JB. It is my go to. I have one in a LTD AS-1 Skolnick hardtail and that is just a great guitar. Slightly less articulate than my #1 LP with a JB, but it rings loud unplugged and plays great.

FWIW, one thing I notice with the JB is it much prefers the SD-1 to the TS808.

Welllll...the low-end is A LOT tighter and punchier on a DD than a JB...
The JB tends to shine in the right guitar and sometimes be a bit lacklustre in the wrong one. The DD IME is more powerful and takes over, so it seems a bit less dependant of what the guitar is.
