A couple of months ago I purchased the new version of the Hot Cat 1x12 combo. It had most of the things we love about Bad Cat amps but really fell short as a stock amp asis. As far as my ears can tell the boost on each channel is a simulation of the EF86 circuit which it no longer has for obvious reasons (reliability of tubes etc.)

The amp comes stock fully loaded with re-branded JJ's. While they are very quiet HG tubes they have a sterile, somewhat brittle lifeless tone at best which makes this amp sound just meh regardless of speaker configuration used with it. I considered taking it back but wanted to give it a chance so I went to work.To make a long story short I ended up putting NOS Valvos in V1 thru V3 and a ANOS long Black plate RCA in the PI position. The JJ EL34's had to go also and were replaced with an old pair of NOS Svetlana Winged C's. This is not even the same amp anymore...it now retains all shimmer and Chime that a Bad Cat should without the harshness and brittle lifelessness it had before, and so MUCH more. These new versions truly are remarkable amps with the right love and I actually can't believe they come stock as they due for a $2000 amp. They are doing a really good design a great injustice. You can not even begin to believe that they are the same amp...they really are that good. If you try one out DO NOT be put off by the stock sound. The work and expense of properly tubing this is well worth it.
I also had to do the same to my Black Cat and the improvement was astronomical.

In my opinion the Custom voiced Celestion V30's is not an ideal pairing for this amp. I also prefer 2x12 cabs over 1x12 combo's. I am planning to load one of my 2x12 cabs with either Cream Backs or Golds and am curious as to the opinion of those more experienced with those speakers what they think would be a better match and why. Currently I am running it thru a 2x12 with a well broke in V30 and a CL80 and this sounds much better than the V30 in the combo.
I would also like to add that I am going to add a Synergy SYN 1 and a Friedman BE/BB module to this mix so bare in mind the compromise. Thank you in advance for your input.

Nice review. I played a Hot Cat 112 once and was pretty impressed. And that's coming from a beginner

I had an Avatar 212 cab at one point with a CL80 and G12H30 in it. I bet it would sound great with a G12H30

my Avatar has a Vintage 30\G12H30 in it, great cab!

The difference with NOS tubes is always shocking!! I did the same with my Rivera Clubster Royale Recording. Absolutely freaking amazing. I have been telling people about the RCA blackplates and their magic. Even just 1 in the PI does absolute wonders. Glad the tubes helped it get where it needed to be.

I’m loved my Hot Cat 50w. Idk about these new ones but that’s the amp I most regret selling.

I've had the head for the last 4 months and agree that it's a fantastic amp. It's a different animal than the previous iterations and IMO kind of captures the spirit of the original Lynx from way back in the day. I don't have much vintage glass so I can't speak to that and finding the chime/BC voice had more to do with nailing the vol sweet spot for me. Tons of punch and high mid bark that really reminds me of an MCII but with the compression you'd expect from a BC.

Great review, and someone correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't the EF86 a Black Cat thing? I don't remember that tube compliment in any Hot Cat.

Thought I would add an update. I put a Celestion Alnico Gold in the Hot Cat combo and added a 1x12 cab with the scumback H55 30 watt. This is a VAST improvement and did exactly what I wanted it to.

But there is a two fold reason it sounded so bad before. Bad cat is no longer using Bad Cat custom voiced Vintage 30's. They are loading them with stock Made In China V30's. Also there is a design in mounting flaw and the speaker overlaps the raised edge of the lighted logo so the speaker cannot be mounted flush without over tightening the speaker to try to compensate or modifying mounting ring material.

Do you still have this Hot Cat amp? Did the new tubes and new speaker help with using overdrive pedals?

Yes ,I still have the amp. The tube compliment did make an improvement on the pedals I use. I have an old Chandler Tube driver and I swqp the 12ax7 for a 50's Mullard 12au7. This allows much more range with this pedal. I also use a PRS Horsemeat which I am liking more and more as I use it.

Where did you purchase your tubes? Did you replace all 4 preamp tubes?

Good to know about the Wing ~C~ EL34's

There isnt a bad video on YT about that amp. Kinda torn between the Hot Cat or the Lynx.

Only difference is I want a head and pump it through 4x12's

Grab that Lynx head and get to rippin'!

The newer Lynx 50 is a hot mess. WAY too much gain, and WAY too much low end, (that I couldn't tighten up no matter what I did, using every boost I had in my arsenal). It was literally the most disappointing amp I ever bought, and couldn't return it fast enough. It appears they dropped the price to $1699 everywhere.

I wanted something "unique", and it was uniquely horrible.

I have a stash that I have collected over the last 30 years or so. I did replace all 4 preamp tubes. NOS Valvos in V1 thru V3 and a ANOS long Black plate RCA in the PI position.
