Hi guys,

I need your advise here.

I want to change my pickups, and want to move into the Bare knuckle's. I've heard many great things about this pickups (althuogh I have never been able to actually play one in person, due to where I live).

So, I want to give them a try to get some, but I dont know exactly which one would be the best for me.

What I'm looking for is something near the EMG 81-60 set ... talking about aggresive, good for metal riffs, excellent palm-mutes, BUT with more clarity, better for solos, and with a better melodic response... off course, a better CLEAN mode (emg are not the best for that)

I dont know if that is possible, or if these pickups would have a good model for this stuff, but I'd would love to hear your thguohts.

Just you to make an idea... I'm playing Melodic Metal, from Dream Theater to IN FLAMES, SOILWORK, DARK TRANQUILLITY... so that is why the pickups must be AGRESSIVE LIKE HELL, but great in melodies as well...

Any idea ??? or should simply talk to Santa for a miracle ?

Could also someone explain me how the KOhm works in the pickups ?? .. the higher the better for metal but worst for cleans ??? (I have not much idea about this, so any advises would be really appreciated)

Ben.

Hey Ben,

I´m not too much into pickups, but You don´t need
a high output type to get enough distortion. It should
have good treble to achieve a prober attack on the strings.
7 to 10 kiloohms would be enough. It also depends on the
material of the magnet, they call it alnico 3, 4 or 5 or somewhat.

I assume the guys have more experience than me.

Warpigs are good. Ridiculously high output (has as much output tapped as many humbuckers have in total), but with complete clarity. Order with ceramic magnet for even more tightness. I currently use a Miracle Man/Mule set in my #1 - Miracle Man is quite hot, loads of definition, Mule is a fantastic PAF equivalent, both tap well. The Nailbombs are a bit looser and lairier, although this is all academic as they're still very well defined.

My next guitar will either be Nailbomb or Warpig loaded, and I'll plan on putting Nailbombs in my PRS when I get the cash.

Not sure on the rest of the BKP range, but the Warpig is close to the ultimate metal pickup and is truely evil through a Herbert.

One thing that you may not have thought about but is a lot of fun - borrow a guitar with P90s and plug that into the Herbert. Might not suit your style but it's a dirty combination!

Nice pickups. I wouldn't go any hotter than their Black Dogs. 10K or under. You'll be able to use the gain of the Herbert. Any hotter than that, you'll be restricted in the amount of gain you can use and still have some sort of clarity. Listen to clips of people who run high-output pickups with high gain settings on the Herbert. It sounds like a mess. And they need noise gates to control them. I use 7-9K buckers and still can only run the gain on Channel 3 at noon. And I play a lot of metal too. Channel 2, I can go to 2:00 on the gain. Sounds awesome, and cleans up with a touch of the guitar volume knob. Can't do that with hot pickups.

The advantage of bare knuckle is, that they are powerfull AND open. So the standard kOhm discussion doesn't fit here.
I normally only use Bare Knuckles.
For the Herbert the nailbomb is an excellent choice. Peter Stapfer plays these in a setneck LP-style guitar over the Herbert.
Everything you discribed for need is not the problem. The walnut-guitar has nailbombs with on-on-on-switch you have all the fexibility you can imagine.
Some weeks ago a guy wanted a bridge nailbomb in his sambora strat. Also very nice.
Tim Mills suggested for the EMG-replacement the holy-diver set. I tried the Abraxxas as well and if you are more in the 70ies, this is the choice. I my last project (see below) I installed the rebell yell set (Steve Stevens sign.)-Great!!

Thanks for your answers... ;)

Just question Balu... what would you say for a newer metal style ?? a little closer to the numetal, but a little more aggressive ???

I have a doubt between 3 options:

1.- Warpig... (people say this is the most aggresive and better for metal, but may be too much ??)
2.- Miracle Man... (also seems to be very aggresive... would be cool).
3.- Rebell Yell... (a little softer pickups, more rock&roll pickup than metal ?? dont know)

Well, not sure yet... all of them seems to be amazing, but hard to choose withour actual hear the differences :(.

It depends also on the way you play. The warpig is a beast you don't need imo with a Herbert cause he can be a beast either, Rebell yell is more versatile, but what I've understand I would try the nailbomb or also the holy diver. With these PUs you have in combination with the Herbert tremendous possibilities. You have to consider that the Herbert has a very wide range of tone. The AlNiCO magnets provide a more organic sound... I love the nailbomb...
But if you are not shure call Tim. he's a great guy, excellent guitar player and might be helpful. It's allways a pleasure to talk to him: +44(0)1326 341313 ECT

The strat-style guitar below has FR-Trem, Bare Knuckle irish tour overwound and nailbomb bridge. And this guy plays all kind of cover music over a Herbert.

Mein lieber Herr Gesangsverein !
Da hat aber einer reingehorcht.

Klar Chef  !!
Und wenn man dann noch die PUs zu tief einstellt, ja dann tun sich erst Möglichkeiten auf :D

eeeeeeeeehhhh MACARENA JARRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLL...

No idea what you are talking abuot deutch crazy guys, :D, but must be funny !!! C'mon guys :D I'd love to know it :P.

I personally sold(or on sale)all my guitars with hi-gain PUs since I've got Diezel & Bogner, the only one I keep is the one with EMGs. Hi-gain pickups in my experience sound thin.

OK: first of all it should be: "deutsch" crazy guys...

What Peter and I talked about is quite simple. I had two of my guitars given to Peter at the Frankfurt Music fair this year. Since then he is allways kidding me, that I adjust the PU's too low. For me its not a matter of cm, mm, inches, it's the result that counts (It's like almost in life...). Now he proposed to fix them at the back of the body...
Simple as that...

You have to know that Balu builds outstanding guitars.
He´s the crazy doc

The Warpig is insane, but a full tonal spectrum of insanity. Don't know about the Rebel Yell.

The Miracle Man is tight - ceramic magnet - and very focused in the mids and upper mids. Not great clean - too harsh, so you need a warmer neck pickup to balance it - but for palm muting and trem picking it's pretty brutal. I've tried my guitar with a Herbert on a few occasions, and the amp makes up for any percieved lack of bottom end in the pickup. It's not the pickup you want for loose playing!

Try posting this on the Bareknuckle forum, they seem to be very knowledgeable on the pickups over there.

I did it, but my main goal is to get advises from people who actually has Diezels (herbert if possible) ;)... that is why I ask it here as well :D...

Thanks for the comments... (any idea about a good neck pickup to go with the Miracle Man ?? ).

Is the bare knuckle site down? I can't seem to log on. It'd be awesome if someone could post a link on this so I can try that, maybe it's just my computer or something?
