Do any of you have experience playing bass through a sans amp pedal in a studio setting? I mainly play guitar but I purchased a bass for my recordings and I have been recording straight into a focusrite 18i20. It gets decent sounds after a bunch of EQ and compression but I was wondering if I should consider getting a sans amp preamp for the bass, then run an XLR into the recording interface.

any thoughts?

Pretty subjective. You don't Need it. You may like the way it sounds. Pretty easy to get a killer bass sound with one. I've used it live and in the studio.

there is also a Sansamp plugin that may be cheaper if you don't need the outboard effect.

Don't forget the vtbass pedal as well which is awesome and cheaper if you don't need the DI.

What we ended up doing was using the sansamp, and also running straight into the board at the same time and blend the 2. I really, really like the Sans amp for gritting up a tone.

I loved mine when I played bass, for recording and for some grit in front of my amp. Killer eq as well

Can't compare the actual hardware vs the interface + processing...but FWIW, I've been using this for years and love it, use it for all bass tracking. Straight into the interface, then applying this plugin, which is based on the Sans Amp Bass unit. Try it, it's free!

The VT Bass pedal is super cool and sounds great to me going straight into the interface. I also will use a Boss bass OD in front of the VT Bass for some dirt.

thanks for the suggestions.. I'm going to try one in a store and see how it goes
