Hey guys,
I'm still cab hunting and haven't seen any used Diezel, Bogner, or Mills acoustics cabs come up on the UK ebay so am getting pretty frustrated! But just saw a Basson 4x12 cab with eminence legend speakers come up on ebay in good condition. I checked it out on harmony central and it has killer reviews so was just wondering what you guys thought of them, and if any of you have played/heard of them (or the speakers) and how they compare to other cabs? Also how do you think it would sound with a herbert compared to my current 1960a marshall?
A quick response would be really appreciate as the auction ends in 2 days.
Thanks in advance. Peace.

Also, I would be using it for home studio use, so how do they do at low volumes and are they directional, full... etc
Thanks.

I would just get a Diezel cab and be done with it. There really is nothing else out there that touches them. Our front load or rear load would be wonderful with your amp.

I will if I can man but i'm a student so practically spent all I have on the herbert. I wouldn't be able to a afford a new one and used diezel cabs don't go around often :/ Has anyone tried the basson cabs though anyway?

I owned a Basson 4x12 for about 2 years. It was the most unmusical, uninspiring and downright disappointing cabs I've ever had the misfortune of plugging into. Harsh, I know, but the best thing I ever did with that cab was to sell it to GC for $350.

I bought it based on the glowing reviews. I didn't even hear it before I bought it; in fact, it was the first "real" cab I owned. When I got my first "real" amp, a 3 channel Dual, I was shocked at how bad it sounded. I spent about a year trying to figure out why I had such sucky tone with such a great amp, and I went through tubes, EQs, different pickups, and finally a different amp all to realize that those godforsaken Eminence Legends paired with the Basson were nothing but trouble. I don't know why they get the glowing reviews they do; many people I've talked to who have tried them feel the same way I do, but who knows. Maybe a bit of hearing loss in the upper register works to build up their tone. ;)

Specifically how do they sound bad? Imaging your tone is very bright, but has no high end shimmer to it. You've got a harsh treble with a few frequencies that pick at your ears, and very few mids although the bass is passable. Makes your tone sound very flat and extremely lifeless. Not only that, but they don't feel like they push much air. Because of the harsh treble, I always turned treble down on my amp but that made it boomy with no bite.

Should you decide the Basson might work for you, it really is imperative that you try one first! I seriously doubt you will want one after that. Hell, an Avatar 2x12 loaded with V30s or something will smoke the Basson and cost less, though I guess it might be an issue with your Herbert at 180w. Anyway, go for the Diezel. If you can't get the Diezel, there are other options that may not sound as good but will still amaze you! Mesa cabs - especially used with some road wear - tend to go for $500 or under.

Let your ears be the judge though. If nothing else, please try to hear the Basson for yourself before buying. netmusicians.org has some pretty accurate sound clips. In fact, I have one up of the Basson but it's EQed so much that it sounds nothing like in person.

Do yourself a favour and dont get an oversized (mesa or other) cab.
These things produce more bass, but Herbert is one of the most powerful bass-monsters out there.
So bass + more bass doesnt sound better... its worse.
I have gone through that experience by myself.

Ok thanks guys,
I'm still open to suggestions to check out though. Currently on my list is the Diezel, Uberkab and Mills acoustics, but I haven't seen any used ones for sale in the UK in the last 2 months :/

I have been using bassons for 8 yrs now playing out many shows with them, recording with them, I have run diezel herbert/vh4,splawn nitro/quickrod, vht pitbull, peavey 6505+,line 6 bogner, mesa triple rec, diamond phantom and nitrox, marshalls, and a few others thru them. They are excellent cabs. They bring out a lot of diff characteristics in the heads.Next im gonna try pulling two of the legends and put in k100s for an x pattern, just to see.Good luck

Yeah man, going by the clips it's not really the tone i'm after. Thanks for putting them up man. I'm so frustrated waiting on ebay UK to deliver me some tone auctions though! :P
