I've pared down my gear to pretty much a couple amps and a few guitars. I'd always felt like I needed two amps, the Mesa Electra Dyne for cleans, blues, and rock and Peavey for metal. I was bummed out at the gain of the mesa, especially after hearing other recordings of lots higher gain. So last week I'm cleaning my office and find the manual for the amp. Picking through it, looking for a tube layout, I find a little blurb about a switch on the back, the clean level knob and switch, which changes the gain structure of the channels. Flip the switch and bang, big difference in gain and compression. Whole new amp nearly.

TL:DR, read your manual before giving up on gear.

Another thing....

Buy one of these in the loop ( #Dangle ) and use it before making ANY decisions:

Or the Whirlwind Perfect 10, but it's a pricier unit...Constant Q and all but regardless, the MXR will get you where you want to go without any issues.

RTFM. I always read the manual before I buy an amp or any gear, part of the research. Agreed, always a good idea if the maker has one.
An EQ right before the amp and in the loop is always a great idea too.

Could not agree with this statement more

I live by my mxr 10 band. Every amp I own/have owned have sounded 10x better with this pedal. Just opens the amp up removing the "boxy" "thin" aspect. Like a whole new amp; like how I would expect the amp to sound from the get go.

i agree with eq's in the loop or at least trying one, i havent found many amps that an eq cant help out a little

Very good advice; actually need to buy one of those, just to keep around.

Once you do, you'll find you may want a couple because they're really just that handy!! I've got an MXR10 and the Whirlwind-P10 and some older crummy noisy ones from 30 years ago... The MXR M108S is inexpensive, excellent, quiet and easy to use. The Whirlwind is pricier, more "studio professional", but sounds just as good. Now having incorporated these into my loops, I seem to want a few perma-dangled from my amps. It's like opening up the amp or adding a couple extra channels - and it's very inexpensive.

I thought the JJ and Slax were incredible "as is".
I creamed my drawers after dialling them in with the EQs.
Go figure :dunno:
