So here's my new Rebel 30. It's over a 1x12 cab which I just loaded with a Mesa Black Shadow MC90 for giggles. Not liking the speaker with that amp so much! Too right and spikey. But anyway...

Below that is my TM212 cab and beside that, on top of the covered Lonestar my "just sold" Rebel 20. I'll be shipping that out as soon as the dude who won the auction decides to pay up.

I can honestly say I like the 30 more than the 20. For various reasons. One of them being the better cleans. The dirty channel sounds a bit different than the 20, but to my ears it's not better nor worse. Just a bit different. But, I like the extra versatility the amp offers while still being in a small, portable package.

I have one question though:

The Rebel 20 I have is dead quiet. When the guitar's not playing the amp is dead quiet. I mean dead quiet! And.. even with higher gain, the hum is extremely low. Surprising, but awesome. But... My new Rebel 30 has quite a bit of hum on the clean channel. Channel 2 is nice and quiet, it's channel 1 that hums. I tried difference AC jacks in the house, going with and without stuff in the effects loop. Different lines. Plugging straight into it with no pedals. Different guitars. It still hums.

Could this be a tube issue. It's not a bad, bad hum or anything, but given my 20 is so quiet (and my LSC too) I figured something must be wrong.

Any tips?

-Danny

Try swapping/rotating the preamp tubes. If you've still got the 20, pull a preamp tube and try throwing it in each of the 5 spots on the 30 to see if you can isolate the problem. I'm curious, how much you were able to get for your 20 on ebay? I'm thinking of doing the same thing to upgrade to the 30 but I'm not sure how much I should expect to get? Have you A/B'd the 20 vs. the 30 much? I've heard the 30 has a little more gain which concerns me bit because I really like the warm driven sound of the 20.

Hey briguy73:

With a good auction (good photos, description, feedback, etc.) I got $429.00. If lucky, you can get up to $450. To this you must substract eBay and Paypal fees. So, I maybe got about $410 for it.

I A/B the amps, the overdrive is a bit different but definitely not a deal breaker either way. They both posses that distinctice Eggie sound. You can most likely change the sound to suit you best with some tube or speaker swaps.

I has a little more gain, but not a whole lot more. It has more headroom and cleaner cleans though! And the reverb is not half bad. I'm actually stoked it has footswitcheable reverb.

fuzzyguitars: It does look like an Egnater showroom doesn't it? Until I uncover my Mesa ;)

Thanks for the reply. Checked out your website, nice drum videos. The recording quality is pretty impressive for a youtube vid. What kind/how many mic's did you use? Any post polish or straight into the board? My drummer recently bought a set of 7 or 8 mic's which is probably way too many but we trying to figure out how to get a decent mix. A bit like solving a jigsaw puzzle....I'd be really curious to hear some of that rebel 30 recorded with the line out if you get a chance. Cheers.

I think I use about 6-7 mics to record those videos. Yes, I did some post-production work on Logic Pro to achieve those results. I have all the details of the videos as far as recording, mixing and editing written out in some of the video descriptions on YouTube and Vimeo. Plus, I have two blog posts that talk about the production setup. I'll post the links below:

Hope this helps. I'll be doing some recording with the Rebel eventually. I'd like to tell you I'm recording tomorrow, but unfortunately I'm just too swamped right now. I'm preparing for my new baby coming, along with 4-5 other projects and taxes. :aww:

As soon as I've got something, I'll post it here. -Cheers, Danny

Congrats on your Rebal 30. I also have one and in the clean channel only have experienced some noise, I would call it slight crackling rather then hum. I believe it is the tubes. I have not yet tried to re-seat them or replace them. The noise is very low and almost can not be heard unless I am within 3 feet or so. Even with the amp turned up all the way the noise is still very low which makes me think tubes. I just love the way the clean channel sounds and when you throw on a nice OD pedal WOW it really sounds great so I will wait until I can get some new tubes to try out, I really think it will fix the problem and if not I can always look to get it looked at the warranty service is awesome with egnater.

I haven't had a chance to check on the hum issue. I'm going to swap tubes tonight to see. I'll report back tomorrow.

Hey, I'm a bit of a tube newb. Do I need to turn off the amp every time I switch a preamp tube? Or is standby enough?

So, I carefully went through each of the preamp tubes exchanging them with a tube from my Rebel 20. Needless to say, I didn't notice any change. The hum or hiss in channel 1 is still there.

I see some of you guys have the same thing, so maybe this is just something proprietary to this amp. I don't know.

Anybody with a perfectly quiet Channel 1 on the Rebel 30?

The only thing I didn't try was changing the output tubes. Don't know if this will make a difference. I did check the bias and they are fine.

It's not a loud hiss, but given that my Rebel 20 is so quiet, I would've expected this one to be the same.

My Rebel 30 is getting fixed :(

It had a bad fizzle or static on both channels.....really annoying.

I have heard of horror stories of Rebel 30's being at repair shops for months....I hope this isnt the case because I absolutely
love the tone of this amp....or should I say loved

I just spoke to Nate at Egnater Amps. I feel better now. The bit of hiss out of the clean channel is normal. Apparently, the reason is, the volume on the Rebel 30's clean channel is set wide open. There's no extra gain/volume control like there is on channel 2, or on the Rebel 20 for example.

Again, let me point out... The hiss I'm talking about is not loud at all and it's very normal on most amps. There's no crackle or pop at all. The only reason I thought it might not be normal is because of how quiet the 20 is. But, now that I think about it, it makes total sense. It only has one volume knob on the clean channel (which really acts as a gain knob.) So the volume is really always at 100%, and you control the gain with the volume knob.

The equivalent would be taking the volume knob on the dirty channel and putting it at 10. Then even if you put the gain knob only at 1, there will be a bit of hiss because of the fully open volume.

Well, I'm happy. I know it's not faulty! :)

Yesterday, I also took the time to check bias. It was a little hot at 43mV, so it backed it down to 40mV and we are good to go!
