i got a VERY good deal for a used Herbert last december, so i decided to go for it.
here's the amp with the rest of the harem ;-D
i've had the VH4 the longest out of the bunch, and it was quite interesting to compare both. here are my impressions:
both amps can be dialed in quite to sound quite similar on Herb's CH2+ and CH3 on the VH4. still, the gain on the VH4 is fatter and more mid-focused. it seems to cut more treble the preamp than the herbert.
the VH4 has a faster response and feels is much more unforgiving to play
cleans on the herbert have more sparkle and sound overall 'cleaner' than on the VH4. not saying the VH4 can't do sparkly clean cleans, but it can also do more pushed and warm cleans
the herbert is voiced notoriously brighter than the VH4. i'm running the treble at around 10 o'clock on the herbert with the mids and bass around 14-15 o'clock (CH2+) on the herbert to get a fat, mid heavy crunch. a similar voicing is achieved with all pots at noon on CH3 on the VH4
all in all, i really dig the Herbert. it's definitely similar to the VH4 in many regards, but also different enough for being worthwhile owning both
so far i've only have tried EL34BHTs in the Herbert. i'm thinking of getting a pair or quad of 6550's to make the amp a bit less compressed. any recommendations on this?
cheers!
