Is anyone here into Black Metal? I have gotten into some bands like Burzum and I know he used some fucking garbage to record his first albums. I don't want to go totally lo fi but I just want a set it up and go rig...is a 5150 my best bet for all out just good hi gain for the style? $450 to 500 on craigslist all day. I am not worried about the clean, as I will use another amp. This is just for recording.

I had an Engl Savage 120 that I thought was perfect for black metal. I know Emperor used to use them. Or, if you want to be extra grim and kvlt, you can wire a shitty fuzz pedal into a small AM radio and record on a boom box in the woods at night during the winter solstice. Only release on cassette and only release 1 copy.

5150 is a go to but Id agree that ENGL sounds like black metal to me.

Most bands used 5150, rectos, jcm800s for live barring the bands that used pure garbage for buzzsaw tone.

1. Bogner Uberschall (my favorite for any kind of metal)
2. Engl (Savage, Powerball, Raider, Invader, Screamer, etc...)
3. Randall Thrasher (My favorite of all metal amps in the sub $2000 price range)
4. Dual Rectifier (Satyricon uses them I believe)

best, most helpful post ever......subject is to grim and kvlt for rigtalk....

Well are you looking for old school tones or modern black metal tones? If you are looking at Burzum type stuff, use a Marshall and a RAT. I know Morgan of Marduk is a huge Mesa Dual Rec user (or was in all the live vids I have seen). Enslaved guys use Marshall amps and JMP-1 preamp. ANYTHING will do BM.

bast evuhlz evar!

If you are more into the Dimmu, Old Man's Child, Emperor stuff, then yes, for sure Engl.

When I think Black Metal, I think Marshall. 8100 or anything boosted to sound similar. Engl seems more like the more polished, death metal-ish tone. But there are so many sub-genres of metal it's kinda silly. Anything high gain that tracks fast should work fine.

Ampeg VH-140C, Valvestate 8100, Dual Rec, VHT stuff, ENGL stuff.

I've always used a dual rec in orange mode with a boost. Can cover a huge range of sounds and styles and always sounded great to my ears.

This!

Burzum recorded his guitar on a PC gaming headset mic set against a marshal practice amp, now that's true kvlt!

5150 will work perfectly fine. Cheap and it'll get the job done. If you're not happy with the overall tone you can always just flip it and get all your money back. Avoid the 8100, I played with a guy that ran one of these and it did not cut through a full band in a pleasing fashion.

So many amps that will do this style. Like said earlier, it's in the hands.

A 5150 will be way ahead of the game for black metal. Back in the day they were all using shitty gear. Digitech distortions, boss distortions thru shitty amps etc.. just sizzling garbage back then. Saw emporer and bojknagar(cant spell) around 2000 in san fran and it was all old digitech rack stuff then.

Boss katana is a good choice for the SS blackmetalsound. ParaEQ allows precise cuts. Can be crispy SS if you want. Too bad it doesnt have hm-2 built in but has boosts distortions and even metal zone.

Randall RH100, used for $150.
Great amp and you can be Tr00 kvlt (ha, couldn't resist...)
