Best delay and/or reverb for "spacey" sounds?

I have a Boss DD3 paired with a Hardwire reverb and I really enjoy it but I don't think it's enough for me. It's good for high gain stuff but I want something different for my clean tone. I want something more ambient. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't really want to spend $300+ on a single pedal or something, so that gives you an idea of my budget.

I think what you want/need is a delay that can modulate (micro pitch shift) the repeats. Most modern delays do this. So when you have a clean tone and add a trail of many repeats, slow and moderate modulation will give you that spacious shimmer you're looking for.

Flashback or Hardwire for the cheap, Timeline if you wanna go premier league.

I have an older version Visual Sound H2O pedal, which is perfect for this type of stuff.

You could also try the Deluxe Memory Man delay pedals by Electro Harmonix. They have different versions such as the Memory Boy, Memory Toy, Stereo Memory man with Hazarai etc. Just try them all out and buy what sounds best to you and is under your budget.

The Edge from U2 is famous for using the Deluxe Memory Man- it sounds great.

I know you're on a budget, but I'd really recommend either (or both!) of the Strymon El Capistan and the Strymon BlueSky. Perfect for ambient sounds.

something like a used line6 M9 might be good

has a lot of various effects (with up to 3 active at once) , with some huge sounding reverbs (octo verb, particle verb..) and decent delays , add a hint of chorus/flanger to that or a sweep echo... possibilities are endless

on the cheap i'd look at the flashback or one of those analog modulated delay pedals to add to your arsenal a big reverb or even modulated reverb helps a lot

just as an example, from 3:45 in this demo / cranked settings with a bit of chorus'd swells

I use the TC Novadelay, might be over your budget unless you can find one used. Try the TC Flashback instead. I know the Carbon Copy can modulate the delayed signal, but it's not easily tweakable. I think on older models you have to open up the back to adjust the modulation setting.

Strymon all the way but pricey. Cheaper route could be to run a couple delays in series with 2 complete different settings to give it that etheral, 'big', dual delay type vibe... ala Steve Lukather. Like 2 flashbacks... or a DD-2 with a flashback.. etc. Good luck

I've got a Neunaber WET and a Strymon Timeline - I can get TONS of ambient/spacey tones out of that combo...but on a budget, I'd still get the WET personally (not much more expensive than a Boss RV-5) and pair it with a DD-20 or something.

Tons of options out there though :)

If you're not averse to rack effects, an old Intellifex is great for that type of stuff...IMO its one of the few old rack effects that still holds up today (and they're cheap).

Along rupe's lines, another one that sounds great and still holds up is the Alesis Quadraverb. I still use mine religiously and can get those modulated delay sounds. They're pretty cheap these days also and are midi compatible.

I like the WET but I feel like it isn't wouldn't give me the "tails" that I'm looking for. Can you fill me in a bit on it?

And I've seen a few demos of the Hardwire Supernatural and that thing sounds excellent! Anyone have one of these?

Just got mine in the mail today but have yet to plug it in. Totally sold by the online demo.

If you're interested, call soon. They're a limited edition pedal and they told me they estimate they have about 1-2 weeks of stock left. From what I've heard, this is their second and last batch.

Good to know.

There is an El Capistan for sale in the classifieds. I like some one the demos I've seen of it. Can that pedal get me where I need to go?

The supernatural has me intrigued. Thanks for mentioning that. Very cool.

I know it's an overly expensive option, but I don't think anything can touch the AxeFX II in the reverb and delay department.

I have the Mono version - the only knobs are for "Mix" and ''Depth" - with mix at about 3:00 (which is actually 50/50 wet:dry ratio) and the depth at about 2:00...I can get really great ambient sounds.

In response to your "tails" inquiry, the WET has the most beautiful tail I've ever heard in a verb pedal. Its really natural and present, yet its not overbearing. If you set the depth at 3:00 (which again, is actually about 50%) it will create an infinite verb where the tails continue forever.

I like the WET reverb as well. I'm growing pretty tired of my Hardwire. It's so limited.
