best di box?

Hi,

Which DI box do you recommend?

Usually I go straight in to the RME Fireface UCX and then run through a Torpedo Reload to reamp.

I would prefer to be able to plug into the amp directly and take a DI, so what's the best DI box for that application?

I heard the active DI boxes tend to add some noise? But the Countryman Type 85 seems highly regarded, and they're active..
The Radial units seem to have low input impedances, which I find a bit weird..
What about the Rupert Neve Designs RNDI? Anyone using this?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!

Cheers

When I was looking, I was going to get the Countryman.

I doubt that it is the "best" but to a lot of people it seems to be the standard.

Seems like the Type 85 is hard to get in europe :/
I only found the type 10, which seems more suited to acoustic I guess

I recently tried eight different DI boxes and I found the countryman type 85 to be the very best,
I bought one and it has been terrific!

I have a Countryman but I would honestly be surprised if the RME Hi-Z isn't comparable. There are definitely differences in DI, but beyond a suitable input impedance it's getting extremely nit-picky and there could be more substantial upgrades elsewhere. Then again, a DI is like 150 bucks, so whatever, go for it.

Thanks for the responses.

I only want a DI box, so I can directly plug into the amp and record a DI for (maybe) later reamping, not necessarily for tone reasons.

I would think you would need a reamp box to convert your line send for the amplifier, not a DI (although supposedly they can be used in reverse, but I've never tried it myself). You should already have a Hi-Z input on the RME to record the DI guitars.

I tried a bunch of DI boxes and liked the Creation Audio Labs MW1, Countryman 85 and a Radial for active bass pickups.

@Spaceboy I already have a reamp box :)
The point was simply to circumvent going guitar -> interface -> reamp-box -> amp,
and instead be able to directly plug into the amp and take the DI as well. Then if I want to reamp later, I still can, but have the
less noisy version already recorded. There is still less noise plugged in direct.

It's not a lot of noise that is added, but it's audible. I don't mind it much when reamping,
but when I play, I really dislike any added noise. A noise gate isn't the solution, as the noise is still a bit audible when holding out notes long.

@MYDEMISE The MW1 looks very cool, but the price tag is a bit over my limit, I hoped to keep it maximum to about $300.

Hmm looks like I might have to look if the Countryman 85 pops up used somewhere, otherwise there's basically no shops carrying them here.. only the stereo version which is overkill :/
Thanks!
