Best module to get close to the "Orange" sound?

Guys,

I am wondering which module you guys feel would be the best to approximate the Orange sound. I am thinking that the BMAN would get pretty close, maybe a BMAN with a boost pedal in front for the more overdriven sounds.

Thanks,
Rick

I don't think the current module offerings will really get close to the Orange sound. They have such a unique voice. The B'Man wasn't really close at all to the Orange's I've heard or played.

I've been diligent in my requests for an Orange module. I really hope we'll see some new stuff next year. I'd also like to see a Hiwatt and Sunn module. You could always get a Tiny Terror. Costs about the same as a module.

Is the Tiny Terror supposed to be true(ish) to the "classic" 70s-era Orange, or is it an updated sound? I don't really know too much about the various Orange amps. The only "orange" that I have actually played is the fake one inside NI Guitar Rig...(but I liked that!)

Thanks

Well it's a Chinese made British amp. 2 12ax7's and 2 EL84's 15 watts Class A with a half power switch. Major drawback is that it only has one channel. As for being true Orange it's darn close for a good price. You have to consider a big part of that tone is driving the power tubes. The thing is designed to be floored. I would say that this would be closer to the Orange tone than anything currently in production in the modular series. Still keeping my fingers crossed. :D

My buddy has a tiny terror and I took the Mod over with YJs and got REAL close to it with the Vox B side a little different feel but tone wise close.

I've been in love with Orange amps for years, especially the 80s one-channel AD30: more gain than the classic 70s Orange, but still that same tone.

I'm far from a "Professor of Orange" but I've had bandmates that owned a couple different models, and I'm intimately familiar with the NI Guitar Rig 3 emulation. I agree, the NI emulation sounds extremely close, and it almost feels like an amp, too (a bit stiffer, not as dynamic as a real Orange though).

To my ear, at least comparing what I remember about the one-channel AD30 compared to a Marshall Plexi, is that the AD30 sounded a bit more "earthy" and "grainy." Let me try to put it into more technical language. To me, it sounded like the Orange amp had a very "marshally" sounding midrange, but I think the Class A, 4xEL84 power section made it bite more in the higher mid frequencies than a Plexi would. But it was still not chimy or glassy, it still was more Marshall Plexi than a Vox.

And by "grainy" I mean that it didn't just sound like it had more gain on tap than the Marshall, but that the "oscillations" of the gain were a bit slower...it just sounded more raw. If we imagine that the sizzle of "normal" high gain distortion sounds like "ZZZZZZZZ" the AD30 sounded like "Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z." That could have just been the specific one-channel AD30 that my bandmate had, but it sure sounded wicked, vintage but nasty. To me, that's the "holy grail" of Orange tone.

As for modules, I don't own one but I'd guess that starting from an SL module, and then having Egnater tweak the midrange to be a higher frequency would be a start. Then they'd need to tweak out the gain to sound a bit "grainier." But I'd think that would be the module to do it.

Of course, using THD Electronics Yellow Jacket Triodes in your power section would help sell it even more!

Anyway, those are my thoughts. And I'd love to see an Orange module, too!

Which Orange? Which Hiwatt? Which Sunn? Is it a particular amp sound you are looking for or the sound of a certain player who happens to use that brand of amp? We did make one custom Hiwatt module long ago for fun. It was cool but only sounded right if you played "Won't get fooled again". Otherwise it was not impressive.

Hiwatt DR-103
If I'm not mistaken these amps are fairly similar to the Seminar heads. I was thinking...
Channel A Normal/Low
Channel B Normal/high
Bright 1 and 2
Think Pete Townsend, David Gilmour

Orange Rockerverb (minus the 'verb obviously)
I simply love the way the distortion breaks up when it's floored. A bit fuzzy when the gain is dimed. Great for the whole stoner-rock/doom thing. Even the clean sounds fat.

Sunn Model T
Yet again kinda tubby sounding but retains definition. Not an excellent recording but an example...

At any rate, I am certain the 3 modules I'm getting with the M4 on order will more than hold me over until something new comes out. The current stock covers the Marshall and Fender end of the spectrum very nicely. The modular concept is unparalleled and is most assuredly a step in the right direction. Hats off to Bruce, Jeff and all of the folks for designing and implementing unique and aesthetically (as well as sonically) gorgeous gear.

The hiwatt 103 head :D there is a DG103 hiwatt head (DG is for well... david gilmour)im sure i didnt have to explain that.gilmour also used fender amps and alot of effects along with several guitars with different pickups and emg active pickups.pete towshend also used hiwatt along with every other amp out there. For the orange i think the ad30 but i have never played them and would leave the poll up to the ones who are the big orange fans, BUT I would buy the mod anyway  give it a cool orange and white face plate or the cream knobs with an orange stripe. Really i havent found a mod that bruce makes that i dont like.the erect is better than my mesa mkIII ,so much so that i have found the sound in his mod i was trying to get in my mesa.it was like having my mesa moddded just to my playing and tone, what i have been searching for.so i think any new mod he makes would be like getting a custom shop amp built just for you, achieving what those other companies where trying to find. BRUCE  The Create' R of tone

Personally, I'd love to get a module version of the single channel AD30, with the B-channel loaded with that extra helping of Egnater gain!

Not to take away from anything Egnater, because I love their products too, but I think you would be happy with a Tiny Terror. I love mine, it has the distinctive Orange voicing and it's great for recording.

You really can't go wrong with anything modular though.
