The only "orange" that I have actually played is the fake one inside NI Guitar Rig...
I've been in love with Orange amps for years, especially the 80s one-channel AD30: more gain than the classic 70s Orange, but still that same tone.
I'm far from a "Professor of Orange" but I've had bandmates that owned a couple different models, and I'm intimately familiar with the NI Guitar Rig 3 emulation. I agree, the NI emulation sounds extremely close, and it almost feels like an amp, too (a bit stiffer, not as dynamic as a real Orange though).
To my ear, at least comparing what I remember about the one-channel AD30 compared to a Marshall Plexi, is that the AD30 sounded a bit more "earthy" and "grainy." Let me try to put it into more technical language. To me, it sounded like the Orange amp had a very "marshally" sounding midrange, but I think the Class A, 4xEL84 power section made it bite more in the higher mid frequencies than a Plexi would. But it was still not chimy or glassy, it still was more Marshall Plexi than a Vox.
And by "grainy" I mean that it didn't just sound like it had more gain on tap than the Marshall, but that the "oscillations" of the gain were a bit slower...it just sounded more raw. If we imagine that the sizzle of "normal" high gain distortion sounds like "ZZZZZZZZ" the AD30 sounded like "Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z." That could have just been the specific one-channel AD30 that my bandmate had, but it sure sounded wicked, vintage but nasty. To me, that's the "holy grail" of Orange tone.
As for modules, I don't own one but I'd guess that starting from an SL module, and then having Egnater tweak the midrange to be a higher frequency would be a start. Then they'd need to tweak out the gain to sound a bit "grainier." But I'd think that would be the module to do it.
Of course, using THD Electronics Yellow Jacket Triodes in your power section would help sell it even more!
Anyway, those are my thoughts. And I'd love to see an Orange module, too!
