I am looking to buy an SG style guitar, but do not want to purchase a Gibson, due to their lack of quality & craftsmanship.

Which brands out there sell a quality high end SG type guitar?

Seriously??? This forum needs a facepalm smilie.

That's a crazy position to take on the original builder of the SG and double-cut Les Paul, dude. Sure, Gibby's had its share of up and down QC, but that's not to say with some careful investigation and knowing what it is you want, that you can't get a killer guitar that's actually the real deal Gibson. All it takes is finding a couple and giving 'em a test drive.

Outside of this, ESP makes a killer SG-like guitar.

[Yes, mega facepalm smilies please]

I'm going to agree with the strange position to take, but if you're really not wanting a Gibson I guess different strokes.

One thing to note about the esp Viper is it's similar in shape to the SG but it's much thicker. If you want a true SG style, the Viper won't fit the bill.

The Gibson Diablos and Carved Top SGs are super guitars and worth considering. There's a company that's called something like US custom or American Custom that had some cool looking SGs, available with floyds and other custom options; I was always curious about those

Depends on the price you want but there are a few. Guild and Edwards (ESP) are the first that come to mind. Yamaha makes a cool one. Kind of a cross be an SG and Les Paul. Check out some of the newer Phil X videos he plays one. If price is no object Jaydee makes a really badass one.

ESP Vipers are great. Guild S-100 are awesome. Check out also US Masters Hornet.

1. ONLY gibson makes an SG. 2. EVERY company has turds. i have an esp horizon sitting in my closet that i just gave up on after going over the fret board a half dozen times. its been collecting dust for 4-5 years. its just not worth putting any more money into it. ive owned a few esp's and they've been fantastic guitars. just not that one. you can find stupid deals on real, used SG's, that you can get your hands on and feel it. i bought a faded SG a few years ago that had an ebony board, for around 300 bucks, and it was an amazing guitar.
try some shit used, you might walk away better informed.

I have 3 Gibson SGs. All are awesome. All are quality. All are stock. I get compliments on all of them. I recently had a guy play two of them who was like you and hates Gibsons and SGs. He played mine and decided that the ones he saw prior just weren't setup correctly. He loved mine and now wants one. A guy came buy last night to buy something. He tested it with my '95 SG Standard. He told me he has a '71. He played mine and loved it. That said, he obviously likes SGs. As another poster said, only Gibson makes SGs. If you want something by another company, you want a copy. Keep in mind that all company put out shit now and then. Sure, like everyone else, Gibson has put out their share of turds, but in my 40 years I have played more great Gibsons than bad. I now own 5 Gibsons. I have owned or played pretty much everything. These and my old Taylor are my favorites.

Thanks for the info guys. American Masters seems my best bet.

I wanted to get a 'Gibson' SG, but having tried all the ones available locally at 4 different stores, I couldn't, with a good conscience, shell out a penny for the low quality guitars they're trying sell at top dollar. Poor fret jobs, binding that wasn't put on properly, orange peel finishes etc. You're really only paying the big bucks for the honor of that Gibson logo on your headstock.

I went through this 2 years ago when I wanted a Les Paul. I tried so many, ranging from generic standards for $1000 to custom shop models for $6000. I couldn't find a single decent one, & certainly none worthy of the price, so I got a Carvin CS6 custom shop model that blows away any Les Paul I've ever played. it's not as prestigious as having that good old Gibson logo, but I want a guitar that looks, plays & sounds really really good. When other companies are building the guitar you created for 1/3 of the price & 10x as good, you're doing something wrong, imo.

US Masters is a bit like Carvin with respect to resale, so try to find one used because it will be a steal.

So true. I actually posted a whole long reply to the OP's response about trying every SG in 4 local stores and then just realized essentially what you just posted and then deleted it.. and logged off   I needed to reboot my brain after reading that post.
