What's the difference between the white chassis 101b and black chassis made today?

in a job interview, they'll take the white chassis
unless they have a racial quota

White chassis had a few more bells & whistles. Variax input and assignable speaker outs (you could assign two of the channels to different cabs). Tonally, the white chassis was a bit tamer. New style on the white chassis is similar to Old style on the black.

Played a '94 white chassis and a newer ('07 or '08) black and I thought the white was less compressed-more open sounding. Maybe a bit tamer too.

Depends. If it's a white chassis 100B (variax, dummy load) then it's supposed to be the best XTC. I have one and like it a lot indeed and can attest that it sounds more dynamic, lively and agressive than the 101B or the Classic that I've tried.

If it's a white chassis 101B (with speaker switching option) it's supposed to be the worst XTC. According to many opinions on the web, the speaker switching thing is a tone sucker. However I am relating to other peoples' opinions here.

It is a 101b from 94. I guess I'll try it out to see how it compares. I had about 6 of the newer xtc's so I'll know right away if it's good or not.

I had heard that too, but never from someone that owned one. Personally, I never used the assignable cab option on mine and it sounded great. It is more open/less compressed than the newer 101B's, but having less gain will do that. I wouldn't have sold it except that I had a chance to pick up a newr 101B + 4x12 for what I sold it for.

I think a lot of the reason 101b (black chassis) is synonymous with "compressed" is because of that '04 gain mod. I was on the verge of selling mine until I installed Marvel's mod - putting a switch on the back that allows you to choose to engage or disengage the '04 mod. I'd be fine to put my 101b up against any 100b at this point.

To the OP: I'll also say I've heard negative things about white chassis 101b models.

Does anyone actually have this amp or clips of it? Here is a pic of the back. I'm thinking of buying it tomorrow. I'll try it out and see what the fuss is about. $2200 with foot switch and Tuki cover isn't bad?!?!

I talked to Bogner last night and they told me to stay away from the amp and to get a black chassis. Thanks for all your help and opinions guys! I think I want an Uberschall now! I figure the XTC will sound to similar to my fish.

Wow. I find it quite remarkable that they are that honest and open about it. Bad for White Chassis owners but good for everybody else.

Yeah he said the white chassis 100b is a good one but the 101 with the cab switching option was a good idea but didn't sound good.

Charlie from Bogner told me the same, but I think I liked the '94 white chassis w/cab switching better than the newer XTC I played. Just my taste

The white chassis is equivalent to the tone of the newer 101b's on 'Old' style. ie. less aggressive.

Great thread. Thanks Immersed for starting the conversation on it. I was looking at one on EBAY and was strongly considering it but now....not so much lol

Okay. Now having owned 2 classics, 2 101bs, and now a white chassis 101b, I would like to debunk a things that people comment on in different forums.

Yes there is a noticeable difference between a white chassis 101b and a black chassis 101b. Even the layouts on the front panel are different. The excursion setting are in a different order on the white chassis. Excurion A (M,L,T) B (T,L,M). Inside the main board could possible by the same as the 100B with some mods. I couls see some of the references on the board like "air" which was a switch on the 100B. Some people say that the cabiner switching function sucks the tone, but thats rubbish as there is button to always use jack 1. I couls not measure any detectable capacitance or resistiance while using the default jack 1. Bogner confirmed that they changed transformers in 1997 on the Ecstasy.

My sonic evaluation is that the white chassis has noticeably less compression than the black chassis. I may use the word stiff as compared to the black chassis's sponginess. As a result the amp definately feels more aggressive and clear. I actually have to run my presense and treble lower than I would on the black chassis. I definately think the white chassis will stand out better in the mix as you dont have that sometimes overpowering lower mid woofiness. I have heard people reference the white chassis 101b as having a blanket over it. Compared to a 100b, maybe, but is clearer and more articulated that the black chassis 101b

That being said, because of the lack in sponginess some may feel the black chassis has a thicker sound.
