Anyone here ever run the Fish thru the effects return of the XTC 101b? How does this setup compare to running it thru a good VHT or Fryette poweramp. Also is there any overlap in the various channels of the 101B and Fish or are they completely different flavors? Currently absoluting loving my 101b with pre 2004 gain mod and looking to sell my Uberschall and maybe add another bogner. Have had the Uber longer and while it is a great amp for my taste it just does not sound near as good as the xtc (not that they are ever similiar). No desire to play it anymore after falling in love with the xtc.

It will be about the same. The power end of an Uber is awesome I think. The hardest part though, with any preamp, is finding a power amp that will overcome the disconnect between power and pre. To me, you always lose some harmonics and feel with some combinations. Hard to explain. Some just sound/feel better than others though.

Well maybe I just better keep the Uber and just use it as a power amp :D

Well, I didn't say that.... :D

You just have to try a few out to see which has the best dynamics. This will go for any preamp/power combination, as there is a separate power source driving the pre than the power and certainly some difference as opposed to having a single unit. I found the VHT 2/50 and the Mesa to work fine with the Fish.

I agree with Steve, and I recommend the following with the Fish:

1 - Pretty much any VHT (2/50/2, 2/90/2, 2150, 2100, etc.)
2 - Mesa Simul-class 2:90
3 - Randall RT2/50 (surprisingly good with the Fish, and it was nice being able to use 6L6's on the Country channel and EL34's on the gain channels)
4 - Marshall monobloc poweramps (e.g., 9100, 9200, EL34 50/50 and EL34 100/100)
