Episode 42: Boss CE-3 Chorus

My favorite chorus pedal of all time is the Boss CE-2. So, I am a little biased going in with the CE-3. To me, the CE-3 was always like the spandex version of the CE-2. All fancy with it's stereo jack and 80's flavor. But, the CE-3 really is a good chorus. It's not quite as subtle as the CE-2, but it's good.

Stereo outputs on any pedal are a little pointless to me, since I run a mono rig. The vast majority of us do! However, there is a cool little trick you can do with the mode switch. If you set the mode knob to 2, you get a wobbly almost vibrato-like sound out of the mono output. Not super musical, but very weird!

What's interesting, is that the CE-3 came out in 82' and was sold till 92'. That's a pretty long lifespan! It's also the only 3 knob Boss pedal with 3 knobs all in a row and not staggered in some way. (from Bossarea.com).

Ok, so I probably won't use this while I own the CE-2, but if you are looking for a more 80's Boss chorus, this is the ticket.

That sounded real good on the subtle settings.
Very nice.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree. It would be a decent sub for a budget CE-2. Subtle is best!

I have used a very subtle chorus (CE-5) on and off for years and have only recently turned it OFF more, set it heavy, and used it for a stand out effect. I would prefer a CE-2 for the stand out thing only because, if I remember correctly, it's thicker and warmer.

I'm so glad I checked this out. That guitar is pretty close to what I'm looking for! Check out my thread about the Anderson Raven and fill me in on that Switchback, please!

I've always prefered the CE-2 to the CE-3, but the 3 sounds good as well. The more subtle settings sound especially good. Thanks for sharing
