Episode 62: CE-5 Chorus Ensemble
Fresh off my demo for the CH-1 Super Chorus, I decided to dive into the final chorus pedal in the compact lineup, the CE-5 Chorus Ensemble.
The CE-5 is part of the CE line, which includes classics such as the CE-1, CE-2, and even the CE-3. Layout wise, the CE-5 has much more in common with the CH-1 pedal. It has the same Level, Rate, and Depth controls, but the EQ control was changed to a Filter knob with a concentric pot. The filter knob has two separate bands; high and low. This allows you to taylor the chorus effect on each frequency band separately.
Tonewise, the CE-5 is a more modern sounding chorus pedal. Expect to get tones from the 80's up until now. Granted, more vintage tones can be had, it just takes a little tweaking. With that said, I was pleasantly surprised by the nice chorus tones I was getting. Nothing sounded too processed, and I even got a nice faux vibrato. I should add, I used the recommended setting from the manual for this demo. It's something I haven't done before, but it helped to really showcase what it is capable of.
Overall, the CE-5 Chorus Ensemble rounds out the Boss Chorus pedal collection pretty well. It has the most tweakability of any Boss Chorus, and still maintains a nice musical tone. If I had to choose a favorite of the bunch, I'd choose the DC-3 Digital Dimension.
