Episode 61: CH-1 Super Chorus

I’m going to be 100% honest. I have been dreading making videos for the CH-1 Super Chorus and CE-5 Chorus Ensemble. I’m not the biggest chorus fan, and the CE-2 is hard to beat. But, these videos have to get done at some point, right? Well, I was pleasantly surprised!

The Boss CH-1 Super Chorus was released in 1989. It differs from the legendary CE-2) in that it has 2 additional knobs and a stereo output. Like many Boss pedals are actually 2 versions of the CH-1. The initial 10 year run of the CH-1 was all analog. In around 2001, they changed the pedal to a digital circuit. I’m assuming the original chips were no longer available. Being the snob I am, I made sure to seek out the analog version, which usually commands a higher price.

So, let’s talk about the pedal itself. Like I mentioned before, the CH-1 has 4 knobs: Level, Rate, EQ, and Depth. They are all pretty self explanatory, except for maybe the EQ knob. Essentially, the EQ knob controls the EQ of the chorus effect itself. Turn it to the right, and you have a modern, bright sounding chorus. Turn it to the left, and you have a more subtle, warm, more CE-2ish chorus tone. This makes the CH-1 actually pretty darn versatile. I’m impressed. It can definitely get into CE-2 territory.

Overall, the CH-1 does a great job coping both modern and old school chorus tones. It may lack the subtle mojo and street cred the Boss CE-2 seems to bring, but the Super Chorus is definitely a pedal to consider. I’d seek out the Pink label for analog goodness.

Sounds great man.
I avoided the CH-1 for years. Got one about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. Classic. It's been around for so long and on so many recordings for a reason. Subtle. Sounds fantastic on cleans and gain.
Highly recommended.
Like everything, moderation is the key.

In the last year or two i picked up one of these pedals from a freind (Devilinside) and love it in front or i. The loop as a lead effect. I know traditionally its for cleans but it really widens my solo tone and thickens it up a bit.

Yep! The CH-1 is a great pedal. As good as any chorus I have tried. Granted, I haven't tried the digital version.
