Boss Pedal Review #40: Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer
We have come to the final chapter in our Boss Compressor trilogy. The only Boss compressor still in production: the CS-3.
In my opinion, the CS-3 is a huge improvement over the CS-1, but a step back from the CS-2. Is has the functionality of the CS-2, but you are missing the charm.
The control scheme on the CS-3 is identical to the CS-2, with the exception of a tone knob. I don't totally understand the need for a tone knob. I'm assuming it's there in case you might want to brighten things up if the compressor is darkening your tone. I would have preferred an added 'Release' knob instead.
The sustain knobs is basically a Threshold control. The further you turn it to the right, the lower the threshold. So if you want a really squashed sound, just crank it to the right. The Attack knob is set fast when to the left. You can allow some more transients through if you turn it to the right. Set the Level control so that the bypassed signal is the same as the effected signal.
The CS-3 does have a good tone overall. Like I said, it lacks the charm of the CS-2, but it's very useable. It's almost like an amalgamation of the CS-1 with the bright switch and the CS-2. But unlike the CS-1, it's useable!
