Boss ES-5 Announced

I was excited until I saw it had no FX loop insert. So, you'd have to sacrifice a loop, run it always on, and use 4CM-ish with it in order to use it in an amp FX loop, leaving you with 4 loops and some interesting wiring.

Agreed. This thing would be PERFECT if they had put an FX loop in. With the way BOSS has been hitting most things out of the park lately, this is a major head scratcher.

I run a smaller pedalboard that includes a couple pedals with midi controls on it, this would be perfect for me. 5 loops for analog pedals, midi control my digital ones plus amp switching. This really appeals to me.

I see that now. Still might be ok for me. I plan to use only 2 pedals in my effects loop: Timeline and Mobius. Technically, I don't need a loop for those on the ES-5 as I imagine I'd be able to turn them on and off via MIDI? Or am I getting that wrong?

What about the gig rig?
I should take a look at those.
I think you can program the path of each pedal. Changing order of pedals and loops. The guy in the vid uses one for pedal comparisons. I'm kinda addicted to watching all the vids.  Some start out with off track conversations

Its been really hard for me to put money into these switching systems as I am still not ready to give up the space and pedals on my board to put one of these on. Not to mention, whenever I look at the cost, I would rather spend my money in different ways. I see the benefit, but its been a hard sell for me. Guess I don't mind tap dancing.

Same here, appeals to me as well if it can control my axe and my Diezel via MIDI while allowing the use of a few analog pedals.

At $399 it is the cost of most midi only pedals, works for me.

I've been using a Rivera RM1 for years. Cheaper than this and still better. Glab has this stuff down

Where did you see the cost was $399? That's great. I'd buy one today.

so whats the deal with the loop?

I don't think the ES-8 has one either. For me it's not an issue. Right now I only run a Strymon Timeline and Mobius in the loop. I can control via MIDI in the unit and don't need to use loops for them. In fact, I may add a Big Sky too.

The price is $399 as well. Just saw it on Sweetwater.

The ES-8 has an FX loop insert, but the ES-5 doesn't. If you're only using midi controlled pedals in the loop than can be bypassed via midi, you're good to go. At $399, it's a great value regardless. The ES-8 was always open to coupon use at stores, so I assume this would be too (getting you 20%+ off at times), making it an even better deal.

I didn't realize it had an insert. I'll have to take a look at it again.

It should probably be less then half the cost of it's bigger brother one would think. Awesome !!!!!!!

I've been using a Musicomlabs switcher now for a few years and love it. These multi loop midi switchers have been out for years (i.e. Gigrig). What's special about the Boss version?

Checked out the ES5 yesterday; pretty much half the size as the 8 while retaining the same key functions. However, the deal breaker for me was that there was only one switch for changing banks -- up. So to go from bank 2 to bank 1, you have to cycle through all the other banks first.

But for basic switching, direct mode etc, hell yeah its outstanding!

Oh and to the post regarding the Musicom Mkiii, the Boss lets you reprogram pedal order per each patch and also features momentary switching as well.
