Episode #23: Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal

Ok, so everyone talks about the HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal. It's the one made 'famous' by Entombed and other Swedish death metal bands of the early 90's. But, you never hear about the HM-3 Hyper Metal. Well, I think I know why...

The HM-3 Hyper Metal has essentially the same layout as the HM- 2. The EQ section is very aggressive with cut and boost for Hi and Low frequencies. The goal of the HM-2 is retained in the HM-3, but it just doesn't have the same charm. You can't get the buzz saw guitar sound like you can in the HM-2. Instead, you get a fuzzy nasty sound that isn't very appealing.

With a clean amp, I like to set the level at 3:00. Into a dirty amp, setting the level at 12:00 works best. You can then tailor the EQ and Distortion controls to taste. As with most all Boss dirt pedals, it sounds much fuller into a dirty amp than a clean one.

Overall, it doesn't sound bad, but it isn't anything amazing. The Hyper Metal was produced until 1998 and pretty much lived in the shadow of the Heavy Metal and Metal Zone pedals. We will get to that latter, later.
