Bought a Diezel Einstein (my first) -- Recommended Tubes?

Hello All --

This is my first post here at RT. I'm a long-time BaMer and Gear Pager, and I'm happy to have gotten hooked up here as well.

Question -- I just got a great deal on a 50-Watt Einstein Head. I have no idea what tubes it's going to arrive with, so I'm hoping someone here can set me straight on what the optimum line-up of tubes is for this amp. The V1 slot is of particular interest.

Cheers and many thanks for any help you can give!

for V1 and V2 use Ruby 12AX7 AC5 H+

I like KT88 for my power tubes personally

I'm not 100% sure about the Einstein but newer VH4 and Herbert have TAD 7025 HIGHGRADE in V1 and RUBY 12ax7ac5 HG+ in V2,
in the other positions RUBY 12ax7ac5 HG. ;)

What's up, Sarge? Diezel and PRS are a lethal combination, brother!

Hell yeah! Certainly sounds massive on my rig.

Thanks for all the tips, fellas. Should be receiving the amp by Tuesday (little mix up with the shipping has kept her in transit longer than I'd hoped). I'll see what's under the hood and if anything's amiss, I will be seeking enlightenment back here on the board :)

Full tone report the day I get her. Gonna bust out a Custom 24 with Dragon I pickups and finally taste the thunder firsthand.

Want to give a shout to Chris, who totally hooked me up on this baby. I just sold two amps off this weekend to help pay for the Einstein. I know it's gonna be well worth it.

Okay... just got her out of the box and had a chance to give her a test run.

Of course, the Diezel sound is INCREDIBLE. If they had made these things when I was growing up, I never would have finished high school

Here's one issue I've noticed so far -- that Channel One is somewhat "brighter" than Channel Two. Further, at equal volume and gain settings Channel Two is A LOT noisier. You can hear the obvious difference when using the footswitch.

Love to hear any thoughts on this. Does this sound familiar at all? Is this perhaps a tube issue?

Haven't had a chance to look under the hood yet, so I'm not totally sure what the current tube line-up is.

All that said, I LOVE THIS AMP. I'm really, really digging this sound...

Do you compare Ch1/Mode 3 with Ch2? If so, yes the Mode 3 is brighter and less compressed than Ch 2, and that's absolutely normal. Ch1/M3 is like a hot rod marshall, that's pushed really hard, and Ch 2 is a more singing lead tone, with less "hair"

About the noise, it's about the same ammount of noise on the 2 channels, at the same gain settings. Of course, Ch 2 has more gain stages, and therefore it is normal to be a bit noisier, but it's not a big difference.

Thanks for the input, Dass. Much appreciated.

If there were a tube-related noise issue, which tube(s) correlate to Channel Two? Perhaps I could start by swapping those out?

Can you tell me what tubes you're using currently? I'm considering re-tubing her to start fresh. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am using the stock configurations, because I bought the amp new about two months ago. You'd better check with Diezel and ask them for a "fresh" retube recomandation. From what I know, only V2 is for the second channel, all the other ones are shared. If I were you I would start by replacing that one with a high quality tube. Some people had good results by replacing V2 with a 12AT7, to lower the gain and the compression (and also the noise floor) for Ch2

Thanks again! Sounds like something to check out.

Just to make sure I know the lay of the land -- which are the V1 and V2 slots? If I'm looking in from the back of the amp, where are they located?

V1 is the closest to the input jack. That means when you look from the back of the amp they start from your right.
