I have 24 hours to send it back for a refund, so I figured I'd offer ity here first for a trade...Modded XTC would work, stock XTC plus $$$ or outright sale at $375.

Right now 5881's. I have a pair of 6l6's and EL34's that I'll try down the line. I'm just not a fan of the voicing.

What do you use for power amp tubes in your mod50?

I was tracking tonight and EG5 double tracked with E-Rect was absolutely massive. Tight, big, and sat perfect in the mix. For what its worth... What are you not liking about the voicing? Be careful to EQ treble with your ears and not eyes. It can get very bright if you arent careful.

I'm not sure...maybe it's too Mid heavy? I think I'd be happier with an e-rect for my modern tones. I think I'm going to hold off on returning it, and either sell it, or try it with EL34's.

If you like 80s metal, you will like the EG5. Funny though it doesn't work well for leads although with EL34s I can get it passable. It is just too stiff with weird mids and way way too much gain and treble. It hass more gain than a 5150 with a metal zone pedal in front! Why do that??? They should have kept a closer watch on the gain when designing this one. The modern high gain realm is probably better handles by the SL2 which can do plexi to Bogner easily. Then there is the E-Rec which is probably warmer than the EG5 and smoother, more versatile. One thing the EG5 has going is the tight, percussive nature but it sounds too compressed to me and not thick enough. :(

It could very well be I don't like the voicing of it by myself, but I may dig it in a band context. I'll find out Monday.

It's not for everyone. I personally love the EG5 the way it is. It is the perfect SLO100 type of tone, and has the perfect amount of gain for what I am looking for. I disagree w/ the 5150 w/ a metal zone pedal in front. I have owned a couple 5150's and it really has about similar gain to a 5150 in my opinion. I play a lot of "modern rock" and w/ a VHT 2/90/2 and the EG5 gives me a really awesome modern tone. The SL2 does a good job too for more chord based stuff, but for a lot of one note riff type of stuff, the EG5 does a really good job. I use the EG5 though for chord based stuff too, and it really excels at that. Ask Jeff to see if he could mod the EG5 to give you the tone you are looking for.

Well, I didn't ship it back today, so unless it sells, it will get another day to win me over. I just scored a XTC module on the bay. That one will probably end up being tweaked if I don't dig it.

Anyone try running lower gain tubes in their eg5? I think I may try this next week once I get a bit more free time.

Eric, I have been upset with the EG5 but tonight I was determined to approach it with a clear head and new ideas on EQ. After some tweaking and keeping the gain at about 10:00 and always keeping the mids arounf noon, I am starting to like it. :) I was getting some gret Tool tones this evening. It really is pretty versatile. I have to take back some f what I said......but I still think it has too much gain. ;)

You guys all know how indecisive I am!  ;) Thanks for hangin in there with me fellas.....I can't wait to test her out at a jam.

I think I'm along there with you Rich, I need to play around with a bit more. This module is definitely for the gain freaks! I don't think I go about 10:00 either lol.. I think I had the misconception that the eg5 would be closer to that diezel low-mid push kind of modern tones. The clips I've heard of the MHG seem to be pretty different than the eg5, with the MHG being more "chewy" and the eg5 more "exact". I've heard people say to not limit this module to 80s, but I think this module can do that very well, along with trash or classic metal too. Most of the modules are pretty versatile, this one being no exception, but to my ears those are the sounds it wants to gravitate more towards, or are easier to dial in. I've loved some of the clips erics done with the eg5 though and those sounded great to me, so I'm not riding off this module soon either.

I hear you! I used the MHG for a year and loved it with the band, very thick and chewy. I even had the pleasure of hearing it from the audience as a friend borrowed it. However, the other guitarists had a Fender amp with some issues so the MHG still stood out and sounded huge. When I played with the band, I always found myself reaching for mids or highs to stand out more. I then had a jam with friends and the other guitarist had a Marshall DSL and I couldn't compete well. It was my first time playing in that room so maybe it was the acoustics - either way, I traded it for the EG5.

Since then, I have not gigges or jammed with it, only at home at various levels. I have a jam in a few weeks and it will be tested. 80s metal, while I grew up on it, is not my thing any longer. However, tweaking the EG5 with less gain (10:00) and less treble gives good results, but I would prefer a deeper, lower mid push, something that sounds huge, not so cutting and strident. Maybe the E-Rec is the answer if it can handle leads as well as the EG5. I am not giving up however. More will be told at the jam in a few weeks. A modified Randall XTC to be tighter would be perfect but the XTCs I played were all on the flubby side for rhythm but killer for lead. I eventually plan to get the E-Rec and maybe by then I will sell one of these. Maybe Egnater will have some new high gainers out by then. Till then, the SL2 is still my go to module.

Try this.....
brite and bass switch off (some like bass on)
gain 10:00 - both channels! (channel B will still feel more gainy and compressed)
bass - 10:00-11:00
mids - 12:00
treble - 9:00-10:00
density - 11:00
presence - 11:00

Believe me, I find 10:00 more than enough gain - channel A Led Zep to Van Halen and STP depending on guitar volume knob.
channel B Van Halen to Alice in Chains to Tool.

I keep trying to simulate a more chewy modern grind, but the SL2 can get close to that on channel B. I compared my SL2 to the Pete modded XTC and it was close! Wish I still had the MHG for comparisons.

I forget where, but there was a post where Jeff explained the inherent problems with the MHG and EQ with a band. With bass and mids up and teble down, you can get a clearer version of the MHG.

Cool, thanks for the settings. I think I have mine set somewhat similarly actually, but I'll double check later. I'm also going to try a tube swap because I think one of the tubes may need replacing.

I think we were both looking for that same kind of sound since your description sounds exactly like what I want. I'm not one to scoop the mids out, maybe a little dip at most, but I like the sound of an amp that has that low mid and bass along with the traditional mids.

I have an E-rect coming in this week so I'll let you know how it sounds and compares!I could see erect for rhythm and then eg5 for leads. I'm sure the eg5 leads would cut through like a mo' fo', but I want that thicker punch/rhythm sounds.

The EG5 is good for leads but the SL2 edges it out. The SL2 will do that thick chewy high gain tone you want as well. I have the Mod 50 so the EG5 will have to be my rhythm and lead when it is in the head. Maybe omeday I'll have the E2. I thikn the EG5 actually does a very punchy and tight/percussive rhythm.

Shoot me a PM when you compare the E-Rec to remind me! Thanks!

yup, I have an sl2 also and I looove it's lead tone.

I'm definitely going to order an e2 once they're out. Hell, at this rate, I might need an e2 and an m4

I'll definitely shoot you a PM or maybe also post here for others that may be interested.
