Hi
A while ago I posted about the clean channel on the VH4 sounding muffled, dark and generally sour, and I followed the advice of changing the tubes. I changed all the pre amp tubes, and also tried new power amp tubes, but none of this worked. The channel works whenever the amp has been on for about 30 mins, but only if you keep a constant signal through it. Also, the amp seems to work again if hit on the top. The clip I have attached is the clean problem I am having, followed by me hitting the amp at the end, and the clean tone returning.
I am quite dissapointed that in order to make a £2000 amp head work properly, I have to resort to hitting it, and even then that only fixes the problem momentarily.
Can someone please listen to the clip of the problem and help me out?! I'm literally at my wit's end with this now, after spending over £150 on new tubes, only to find that it is the amp that is broken, not the tubes.
Hopefully one of these links will work (I also attached the file to this post):

Sounds like a bad cable or jack to me. Did you check your guitar & speaker cable. Also try Jiggling the jack on your guitar and the amp. See if it cuts in & out then. Jacks are easy to replace, and cheap.

Thanks for the replies guys, and I don't mean to sound condescending, but the first thing I tried was switching all the cables out and changing guitars. I have tried 3 speaker cables, numerous guitar chords and 3 different guitars, yet the problem persists. The thing is, it's only on the clean channel that this happens, therefore leading me to believe it was a pre amp tube problem. After changing them all out (including the phase inverter) the problem was still there. I've also tried it with the effects loop on and off, and various cables in the direct loop for channel 1. The problem is there whether there are effects in the loop or not.
I've also tried different cabs, but to no avail.
I don't have an amp tech local to me and need to get this sorted asap for obvious reasons, and I'm running out of things to try.
I thought maybe it could be a bad internal pot, as the controls are fine on the front of the amp, but even when it is at full volume the sound is barely audiable (until, of course, you hit it...)

@MAMMATUS: Maybe I should reword: I think one of the cables in your amp has a loose contact.

I didn't see mention of the series insert for your clean channel yet. I think the insert jacks might have a dirt build-up causing the intermittent. Try inserting a plug in and out about 20 times real fast on each jack to clear off the jack contacts. Power off while you do this, probably. Probably a good idea to do this now and then with any series jacks.

If this doesn't work, try a short cable across the insert, just to see what happens.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I have tried cleaning the jack plugs, to no avail. This is really starting to get me down now!
Peter - It's going to cost me upwards of £100 to send the amp to Germany, which I simply can't afford to do at the moment, so I guess I'm stuck with a £2000 paperweight until I can afford to spend yet more money on an amp I no longer trust.
I wish I didn't love the tone of this thing so much!   <-This is exactly what I look like at the moment!

Yesterday I startet my VH4. After playing for about 3 Minutes (sound was still fine) I turned the Volume up to 11 o´clock. Than it happens. No Tone anymore on all Channels. Only sounds like a broken cable. Crzzz crzz....... (changed all cables, tried the box with an other Amp... it´s defenetly the Amp :aww: ) All Tubes glow normal. Before this happened, I noticed that the amp didn´t change the channels when I tried to change them with my midiboard. Thought it was the midicable. But it was not. Can there be a coherence between the midimodule of the amp and the Sound?! Thank you for your answers! I´ll try to slep now...

Yesterday I brought the Amp to a tech. Within an 1/2 hour he found out that it was the TAD 7025 E83CC Highrade Tube and the amp was ready to play the concert :-) Definetly LOVE this amp!!!

Would be nice because I played the Amp for round about 25 Hours now. Where do I Have to send the defective Tube? To TAD? Do they give a warranty? Thanks a lot Peter!
ps.: after the amp has been repaired I´ve been talking a little bit with the tech. He told me that he has not seen such a nice build Amp for long

Hi Peter
My VH4 has been with an amp tech for a week now, and he believes the problem stated above is located on the underside of the circuit board. Apparently it is a double-sided circuit board? Anyway, he said that he simply can’t fix it without un-soldering everything in order to get to the underside of it, and that I should ship it back to yourselves.
Would it be ok for me to get my supplier to ship it back to you as soon as possible, with a write up of exactly what the problem is?
Also, will this be under warranty? I have had the amp for almost a year now.
Regards
Richard
