Bruce or Jeff - your perspective on Elite 80s vs. V30s?

Hi Bruce and Jeff, I just joined the Rig-Talk forum. I'm a guitar player of over 30 years and have played through many rigs, including Marshalls and Fenders, and I must say that today I went to Guitar Center in San Francisco and I tried out your Renegade 65 head and 2x12 cabinet and was blown away by the sound and the dynamics! I do have one question for you. I was originally walking into the store with a bias on speakers towards Celestion Vintage 30s, which I know you stock in your 4x12 cabinets. Is there a reason you stock the Celestion Elite 80s, and not the Vintage 30s, in your 2 x 12? I'm sure there is cause you're one heck of an amp builder and I'm sure you appreciate the nuances of good tone and found some reason that the Elite 80s were better in this config.

Anyway I'm not expecting an immediate response or anything cause you're running a company and I'm just one guitar player with a question, but I am seriously considering going back to Guitar Center this weekend and buying your rig, so your answer would be helpful to my decision making process (which is, do I buy the 4x12 cabinet or the 2x12, and currently I'm leaning towards the 2x12 cause I don't like the idea of lugging around a 100-lb. 4x12 cabinet anymore).

Rich,
Thanks for your question. Simply put we thought the Elite 80 sounded better. With them you loose the V30 kack and get some increased low end. It sounded bigger to us in a smaller box. With the removable back you could add some high end similar to a V30 and it just made sense.
Now I have played V30s my whole life with little to no movement from them. That being said I still got a lot of feedback from pro players who still wanted the V30 mids. John has been messing around with speaker mixing as is everyone. We have to load our products with speakers that will cover the larger majority of buyers due to being in GC. We felt the Elite 80 did that. It's a great all round speaker. But as always the end user get the final say. If we could put the speaker every buyer wanted before they ordered we would be out of biz, so we have to make a neutral decision on speakers, amp tone ect. I hope this helps.

Makes a great deal of sense. You ahve to put speakers in there that 85% of the people will like right out of the gate. Those 15% of ppl like me, are gonna swap speakers regardless!!! But the Elite80s do sound really great! I bet the Renegade 1x12 w/ the Elite 100 would sound awesome.

What changes to a K100 did you guys make to get the Elite 100? Just curious.
