Cab for a Herbert on a budget

So, I'm thinking I'm going to press the go button on getting a Diezel Herbert soon, but I'm not sure what kind of cab to get. I play mostly metal (death, prog) and I've heard only good things about the Diezel front loaded cabs. However, the cabs seem to be kind of expensive. If I'm gonna blow $3k on an amp, I'd like to keep the cab around $500 or less if possible. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Really depends on the speakers you want. You can find used cabs on craigslist all day long.

So your gonna run your high-end amp through a low-end cab.

I'd say your best bet is a used Splawn cab. Then start saving for a Mills Acoustics Afterburner.

I can't give any specific advice as I don't own a Herbert, and I use Diezel cabs with my VH4. However, I will issue a note of caution, trying to save money on the cab could be a false economy, you need a very well built cab to get your money's worth out of the Herbert. (Actually that's a little strong, you don't NEED a top cab, but you'll get better results with one).

See if your Diezel distributor has any ex tour/studio stock.

What have you got at the moment? Can you improve on what you have with $500? If not, save your money for now and get a better cab later (preferably a Diezel :) )

This. Why buy a Bentley and use cheap motor oil?

I use an Avatar for rehearsal with my Herbert, which I have modded a little. & it works nice.

I would hold out till I could afford a better cab, it's really that important.

Understood. To be completely frank, I'd rather not spend the money on the Herbert to begin with, I'm just having difficulty finding another amp that I really like after hearing it. There's not a whole lot of variety in my area when trying out amps (basically there are Peaveys, Marshalls, and Line 6's), so I'm just kind of trying to feel my way around and see what's possible. I just heard some of the AxeFx clips and I think I might be leaning more toward that direction now, however.

I'm a very recent Herbert owner and can attest that a good quality cab makes ALL the difference. ESPECIALLY in a band context. I picked up a Bogner 4x12 cab and while it sounded better than anything I've ever used, it simply wouldn't cut through with the full band (we play LOUD due to a heavy drummer, and the music style is rather heavy stuff w/ a second gtr player). So, right now I'm using my Mesa cab which does sound really good, but isn't anywhere near as good as the Bog. If the Bog hadn't been quite so "choked", or stifled, or whatever, it would have been a winner. Actually, depending on what you play and if you are in a band or not, it could be ideal.

However - and at the risk of sounding like a commercial - the Diezel cabs are probably the best choice, or Mills. I'm hoping to get a 2x12 in both brands soon. Apparently the new Diezel cabs are heaven sent compared to the old ones, which are themselves rather tasty. None of this is what you wan't to hear when on a budget, but it is what it is....

Bottom line, the Herb will sound great no matter what, but there are extreme differences in just how good it can/will sound with the right cab. I'm learning that the hard and expensive way

Try to get your hands on a used Engl fl V30. Works well with the Herbert, but keep in mind that it won't be as awesome as a new Diezel cab...but pretty good for what you play.

I gotta pipe in here and say that I've been toying with different cabs, older model Diezels, some Mesa, some Soldano, some Marshies, some "no name high quality birch" empty cabs, yada yada yada. I blew some coin on all of it - buying it, trying it, trading it, speakers, time, more time, speakers, etc. Ya, I found some decent combinations that still work (but mostly in the 1x12 and 2x12 context - Jensen speakers, Celestion Gold, etc). But with the search for a 4x12......commercial or not - I ended up just having to pull the trigger today on a brand new 4x12 FLG12K Diezel. It had to be done. Best amp in the world deserves the best sounding cabinet in the world.

Now, there's been awesome feedback here - craigslist, eBay, etc. - hell, some peeps on the net make just empty high quality cabinets that you load and wire yourself. If you consider speakers today for a Herbie, you're looking at a rating of say 50W and more for a 4x12 to handle Herb's power. Some speakers really match well - like the G12K100's - they cost ballpark $125/each. so let's say $100 each best buy. Right there is $400 in cones alone. And G12K's aren't even expensive. So...are you going to find an empty shell cabinet for $100...?? Maybe not. And the clincher here is - if you DO find a $500 cabinet - WHY is it SO cheap? Someone's getting rid of it for a reason most likely. Cuz even cabinets that are beat to shit - if they still sound good and people know this and they're sought after - they ain't selling for $500.

Hope this makes a bit of sense. Money can always be made...just don't get too deep into the things you own, ending up owning you.

Peace,
V.

You can get used Marshall 1960s on CL for $350-$400 all day long. Then you can buy yourself some pizza and beer with the extra $100. You can never have too much pizza and beer.

Find a used 4x12 Mesa Recto cab with V30's cheap on ebay. Then start saving for a Diezel 4x12 FL cab with GK100's.
