Cabinet size's affect on tone.

I have a Line 6 Pod (new HD series) as an alternative to my Egnater Rebel.

When a manufacturer models an amplifier, are they only able to model what a mic sitting in front of a speaker cabinet hears, or are they somehow compensating to model what the human ear hears? There is a difference between the two.

One reason that I ask is that I notice that there is a significant difference between picking a 4x12 cab vs say a 2x12 or 1x12 cab. Now a big part of that difference will be if one cab is closed-back (typical of 4x12's) and the others are open-backed. However, if you're comparing two closed-back cabs, the difference should only be the speaker quality right? In other words, that mic sitting on one speaker isn't going to pick up much (aside from a little more volume) out of the other speakers.

Or does the cabinet size make a significant difference on what the mic hears?

The reason that I'm asking is because I've gotten into my Rebel 30 combo because I don't necessarily believe that "bigger is better". But I'm wondering what I might be missing (other than bass response) from having a larger cabinet. I COULD buy an Egnater stack or extension cab for my Rebel 30 combo, but wanted to bounce these thoughts off of the forum first.

I am no expert in this, and I think you are touching on something that can get fairly speculative, individual, and start bringing in a million factors, but my *guess* would be that it would depend on whether it was close or distant miked. Close miked I wouldn't imagine cabinet size would make much difference; Distance miked it probably would, along with a host of other factors and intangibles/uncontrollables that might start occuring depending on the sound situation.

My two cents.
