I sacrificed my new Ecstasy 20th Anniversary for a 101B. I'm not going to say that it is without regret because I REALLY like the green channel, and think the 20th anniversary is a better amp overall. Now I'll have not so great cleans, less flexibility, and a more compressed tone, but I'll have the blue and red channel I've been dreaming of. Unfortunately, the last couple of days I spent with the 20th gave me a chance to discover just how absolutely amazing the red channel sounds in vintage mode. If I wasn't a man of my word, I would have kept the damned thing!

Strangely, the last few days I just so happened to run across several 101B threads complaining about the clean channel and compression of the red channel. Ironically, I find my self wondering if I just made a mistake. One great thing about the 20th was the openness, and oh my God does it have a great clean channel. I have to go to Guitar Center and play a 101B tomorrow so I can ease my mind.

Now I have played the 101B clean channel many times and never thought that it lacked anything. However, I never looked at it from the perspective of the clean channel. I always concentrated on the blue and red channel. I want to say that I always thought the 101B clean channel was just as good as the Shiva clean channel, but like I said, I never really too into account the clean channel that much.

When you are looking at actually owning the damned thing, you start to consider whether being happy with 2 of 3 parts is enough to find satisfaction. Then there's the issue of the FX level being tied to the MV and that the MV needs to be run all the way up to get a good clean tone. That sounds like a big limitation. I have also read of a few cap mods that improves the 101B sound and wonder why Bogner hasn't made any improvements on the 101B.

Perhaps you can ease my mind a little bit here. Are we really talking about a dull, lifeless clean channel or is the 20th a marginal improvement over the 101B? Who here is completely satisfied with their 101B, or prefers the 101B over the 20th?

The clean on the 101B is great. What's all of the fuss about?!

I love the clean channel on the 101B. The trick is to set the Volume at 3 o'clock and use the Gain as the actual volume. Put the Treble and Middle at 11 o'clock , and Bass at 2 o'clock. I also set my Excursion to "M". Gets a great punchy clean tone!

What was wrong with the blue channel on the 20th? If it was equal to the 101b I dont think you would have sold it? Can you describe the basic differences?

The blue channel on the XTC 20th is awesome. Like I said, it's a better overall amp than the 101B. The XTC 20th is more open, and the 101B is more compressed. Some people complain about it sounding compressed and think the openness of the 20th is an improvement. For the most part, I agree; however, I LOVE the sound of the 101B. It has a lot of cut and sits perfectly in a mix, but it's not particularly bright. The 20th has more treble and kind of a bright edge. There is a difference with EL34's, but it's just a different sounding amp than the 101B.

I have a Shiva 20th, but have owned a Shiva. They are two very different sounding amps for the most part. I would say the 20th XTC has the overall XTC vibe, but substantially different. I always dreamed of getting a 101B, and that was my original intention, but being the gear whore I am led me to lust for the ultimate amp rather than the amp I've been dreaming about. Now I went back to what I originally wanted and the XTC20th becomes one of those "I wish I could have kept it" amps.

I've owned a 20th and I ended up getting an older 101b for the same reason. The blue chennal is better. Congrats on the nad!

One of the reasons I opted for the EL34 model over the given 6L6 model.

I felt and continue to feel the tone is best with EL34s. Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

I agree. Just has that EL34 growl!!!!

Hi all, new member here and 101b owner. I've read a lot of negatives about the clean on the 101b and never understood why. Using the tips on running the volume high and using the gain as volume works wonders.
The blue channel, well we all know how awesome that is. The red channel is underrated as well. I have been playing this channel more lately and not just for high gain. It can be dialed in to be very versatile. The 101b  !!!

There's the truth. You don't have to dial it for searing, week-long sustain, which is what everybody that complains seems to be doing..... ;)

I run the red at 11:00 to 12:00 and it has more then enough gain!

The 101B seems to have the perfect amount of gain on all channels. Though the XTC 20th is more versatile, I keep wanting more gain on the blue channel because of the feel/response. The 101B seems to have the same amount of gain on the blue channel, but the feel/response agrees with me more. I wouldn't need more gain from the red channel. The boost provides enough gain. However, I would love it if the Ecstasy had a gain trip pot like the Goldfinger so that you could make the amount of boost gain variable.

That might be true for the blue channel, but for me the red channel (where I spend most of my time) sounded better with 6L6s - more modern, grindy, etc. Loved them both though!

I'm sure some one could mod to have the gain knob.
