Hi,

I'm really interested to hear what amps Herbert users played/looked at before pulling the trigger on a Herbert. I'm close to buying a Herbert after testing out the Engl E670, Bogner Uberschall and Framus Cobra.... and one or two other amps

Also, what amp did the Herbert replace in your rig? I'm an Eisnstein combo user and if funds allow, I want to keep this amp as well as having a Herbert.

Thanks!

Used Bogner Uberschall, Mesa Dual Rectifier & H&K Triamp, H&K Tube 100 before buying the Herbert.

After buying it, XTC 101B, Soldano Avenger with SLO transformer, SLO, Orange OD50, Triple Rectifier, Marshall DSL100, Marshall JCM800 2203KK, Diezel Einstein & VH4, Naylor SC38, Mesa Roadster, vintage Fender Tweed, Roland (whatever that famous model is lol), Orange Rockeverb 30, Marshall Plexi RI (LOVE IT!) there are more, don't remember

Now stuck with Herbert & VH4S. ;)
I still want an Uber, it's just so much fun to play home.

Oh man... I thought I was a serial tone chaser/amp buyer... that is a facinating list of some amazing amps and you ended up with the Herbert & VH4s - amazing!

I see you also want to return to the Uber... for me it is a close call between the Uber and the Herbert, with the Herbert edging it for me.

I owned a Peavey 5150 a VHT 50/CL and a Framus Cobra and played/tried out many more. Now I have the Herbert and the Cobra and I haven't had any amp GAS ever since I got the Herb. If I had to choose one amp I would have a really hard time though as the one thing the Herb can't do is produce the mean and pissed of sound the Cobras crunch channel :m17:

The Herbert replaced back then my Marshall Valvestate 8100 :D

I have had some other amps, mostly borrowed from a few friends, the last months before i dropped the cash on the Diezel - for testing in rehearsal/live/studio-situation. I was mostly stuck between the Engl Savage 120 and the Framus Cobra. i also tested many other amps, but not for that long - i tried in advance the Engl Fire- and Powerball, SE, Peavey 6505/+ and EVH 5150 III, Randall RM100, almost the whole Mesa range, Framus Dragon,...,

..Could then per accident try out a VH4, and BAM! - the others were forgotten right away. I did then ask the shop to order a Herbert, for comparison, and with a bit of help from Peter, they got it then. :D Could then A/B VH4 & Herbert for a few hours, but honestly: The first power chord i played in CH2+, and i knew that the Herbert is my amp.

I had a Engl SE E670 6L6, i traded it for a soldano decatone.

Whyle i had the Engl i bought a herbert.

Before buying the engl i tested a view amp: almost whole engl line up, vew marshalls, mesa dual, including the vh4 which i didnt like.

At the moment i still have the decatone and herbert. Im considering a mark4 instead of the decatone, but not shure yet. Actually im happy with what i have, though a new diezel v30 cab would be nice.

owned
Marshall Valvestate 8100
Marshall Plexi
Marshall Anniversery
ART Powerplant w/ Marshall Power
Peavey 5150
Peavey 5150II
Hughes & Kettner Triamp
Hughes& Kettner Duotone
Hughes & Ketter Triamp MKII

then went amp shopping. Tried em all. Diezel, Bogner, Fuchs, Cornford, Framus, VHT, Orange, Engl,HiWatt, Soldano, Top Hat....u name it...i tried it!! The Herbert felt & sounded the best to me.

since then have gotten the the VH4, another Triamp, Splawn Quickrod & Nitro & a Fender Super Reverb (for shits n giggles) you cant go wrong with the Diezel stuff brotha!!

using both Diezel rigs currently until my back totally gives out!

Thats exactly how I would describe the Cobras crunch channel... and that is why if I had loads $$$$$$ I would have a Cobra as well as a Herbert, but that ain't going to happen in a long while.

It's really interesting to see everyones amp journey before they got their Herberts

Schematic is very close to Soldanos crunch channel
which I also like ;)

I have a Herbert, the Framus Cobra, Engl Powerball, and an early 2ch Dual rectifier. None of them replaced each other or really anything else.

For me my two favorites are my Herbert and Cobra, and they are unable to replace each other in any way because they are two very different sounds. The Cobra is extremely aggressive with it's crunchy, dry, saturated tone. For me it sounds like an SLO meets an Ultra Lead, but with more saturation. My Herbert doesn't do that type of sound even close, but nothing can touch the ultra clear, punchy, and percussive sound the Herbert makes.

I will say my Herbert has ruined my Powerball for me, as to me Engl and Diezel share some of the same hi gain characteristics, just with the Engl being much more saturated and lacks the percussive tone the Herbert makes.

When anyone asks me how the Powerball sounds, I just say it sounds like a crappy version of a Diezel.

A point well made... yes, amps don't necessarily replace each other and often have completely different tones and charateristics. Your point about the Cobra and the Herbert is a good example.

What interests me is sort of peoples amp history on the journey to getting a Herbert. I'd love to be in a position where I could have a Herbert, Cobra and Schmidt sitting next to my Einstein and use which ever amp best suited my needs at the time.

I've had way too many amps to list here.

But in the last couple of years.....
I had:
-a Mesa Stiletto Ace combo which was ok.
-Mesa Roadster combo which I did like but it had a bunch of issues and a transformer also blew on it.
-Diezel Einstein 100W head which was GREAT!

Moved to the Herbert because I really liked the sound of it overall and the midi switching capability as well as that mid-cut feature.

My Herbert replaced my VH4S........
I also liked my Framus Cobra alot.
Had tons of amps. But the Herbert is the one sitting on my full stack. :D

Ah well I'm only a few ££'s away from funding a Herbert... slightly off subject and perhaps I need to start another thread?? But can I get away with using an Engl 212 loaded with V30's or do I need to get apid for some more gigs to get a Diezel 212 cab

Imho the Engl V30 cabs are a pretty good addition to the Herbert. I can only talk about the 412 versions, but from what i've heard the 212 are not far away. The Diezel Cabs, especcially the FL with G12K100, are the perfect match for the Herbert, and again a big step up quality- and soundwise, but the Engl gets the Job done pretty well.

But be aware that a 212 with V30s is rated for 120W maximum, and you have a 180W amp!

I also think you will be fine soundwise with the Engl 2x12. And unless you really crank the Herbert which I never had to (besides just for fun in my bandroom) you shouldn't have a problem with the 120W rating. I've been playing my Herbert through a 2x12 V30 cab loads of times in my bandroom and at shows and never had to go louder than Chanvol ~12 and Master ~10 which is already loud enough to kill a lot of drummers and my 2x12 is still fine.

Thanks guys for the feedback on the Engl 212 and the 180w rating of the Herbert... it's highly unlikely I'll get to 'crank' the amp.

I'm keen on the Herbert for its tones at reasonable db's :) hey man I got grief the last time I cranked the 50w Einstein combo at a small venue a few weeks ago

I'll keep working hard and saving, and then look into the FL with G12K100 - after all it will look amazingly cool with the Herbert too!
