I have a 83 JCM 800.
Mark did the mod, we left the 6550 power tubes. Mark mentioned when I picked it up that it sounded dark in a cool way with them. It has the ECC83 pre tubes in it when I bought it.
Can you suggest some ones that you have tried and what those did to the tone?

It doesn't have the oceon,Aldrich or Jose. It has some "new" mod that Mark called it back when I got it.

I love the Tung-Sol 12ax7 in V1 and either a JJ or Chinese in the V2 position. Then I use Tung-Sol's in the other spots. I say mix and match until you find your desired tone.

I agree with Dave,I retubed with the Chinese and my Aldrich loves them.BTW mine's an '83 as well.

Mark sent my 3 channel modded SLP (HG Jose, Dumble/Boogie, Clean) back with a mix of 2-LPS, 1-Penta, 1-EH, 1-Tung Sol.....sounds great...

I tried some EH 12AX7 today and it sounded better than the ECC83. But that is all I have, I'll have to get some Chinese and Tung Sol.
What about the effects loop?
I thought it weird that Mark put a ECC83 in the that.

Thanks in advance

TOStudent...........If you want to try a bunch of different preamp tubes bring that amp over! (I live not 7 miles from Reynoldsburg in Baltimore! I grew up in Pickerington) That way you get to try out some old and some new pre's and I'll get to play thru a Cameron modded Marshall..........everybody wins!

I know what the Eh means, Electro-harmonix, but what brand are the Penta? and the LPS ? Also, when you guys say, chinese 9th gen, can someone explain this? Where do I get those ? :)

Thanks Hollywood. That always confused the hell out of me. Chinese 9th generation? Please someone explain this.

 Okay. I just went to Doug's tubes website. I started another thread in discussions a bit ago and some of you guys said you buy from Doug's tubes. His website has all the answers to our questions. Here goes. The Penta tubes are Shuguangs made in china labeled and sold for Penta. The chinese 9th gens are duh, chinese made/shuguangs and there are different available versions. They currently have a 8th gen. version also for sale along with the 9th gen. versions. So, I learned a little something today. Now how many of you get these extra services they list on doug's website when ordering any of these tubes?

I have 8th gen and 9th gen Chinese 12ax7 and they do look a little different on the inside of the tube. Is there any tone difference between them? If I remember I think on Dougs tubes he said there is no difference between them tone wise.

Hey guys. This is a great thread because I am wrestling with this very thing. I have a 78 Marshall JMP with the Aldrich mod and went from JJs to GT 12ax7s in the preamp except for the first position which is a tube that came with the amp and I was told by 232cap was probably 8th generation Chinese. The JJs gave the amp super bottom end but the tone suffers greatly. The Cs make the tone great but then you lose a lot of the chunky bottom. I want the best of both so I'll be paying attention to any advice. 232cap also swapped his Winged Cs in the power section and it made a noticable difference. I have to pick up a quad of those before its all said and done. The cab makes a difference as well, My EVHIII cab gives it back the chunck but still a bit dark with that one. The Greenback AX cab is a bit trebly at volume. The 1960A is probably the best for this combination of tubes. So many factors it gets mind numbing after a while! :)

Tonmazz,
Try the Tung-Sol 12ax7. I think that will be the tube you are looking for. They are not as dark as the jj's and have great bottom end to them. I love the Chinese but they do lack in the bottom end.

I run a Tungsol in V1 and Chinese in V2 & V3 in my Ocean.....my HG Jose has a variety of tubes as mentioned above.

I think that it's the speakers that are not giving you what you want. If I were you, I would take a very serious look at trying the Weber 1225 or the Scumbacks....that may indeed be your answer.....sure was for me

Thank you!!! Psychodave.

Finally got some coin to get some some tubes.
bought 3 Chinese and put them in the Cameron.
YEE HAAAWWW!!!
Man I checked and thought Mark left the JJ's that were in when I took to him in the amp.
He must haveswitched them there was some no name or marked tube, a Ruby 12ax7, a GT something.

Any how on to the amp, before it was kind of a fizzy gain chords were kind of sloppy were you couldn't hear individual strings. man the Chinese made the high strings real chimey with a lot of chord clarity. Leads sound clearer.
The galloping and just playing rythm chords are nice and tight. The gain is still there but before it seemed like over gained.
I could run the pre between 9-12 oclock and it seemed like too much.

Take it I am still running the stock Tonezone in my Charvel while I figure out what pick up to swap.
But now to me the amp sounds more like Psychodave's new Aldrich clip he posted.
I think I'll get a Tung Sol or so and try that next. The only other thing I have right now is a new set of JJ and I have not heard any posts where someone put them in a Cameron. Might try it though.
