I have what IMHO is the best sounding Voodoo Jose I've Heard, a Mint 79' with Merc Trannies, and a lot of options... As well as some mods done by myself... But in terms of
Organic Sweet Singing Tone, and FEEL... I think it's superior to my CCV.
Yes the CCV has more Gain, And Is Bigger, and Has that famous Cameron GRIND... And It's got Bottom end and Punch that leaves the Voodoo wimpering and hiding in the corner...
For Really Heavy Stuff the CCV fills the bill, and because of that the CCV is more Versatile. If you want to Play New Metal/Death Metal/Speed Metal - What have you... That's not my thing.
It depends what you want.... But they are so far apart sonically that you really can't compare them... THEY ARE TOO DIFFERENT.
You know what you want, and you Pays your Money!

From experience, a CCV will run circles around any Dual Wreck, stock or modded and kick it to the curb. Not to say that a Voodoo hot-rodded DR isn't a cool amp in its own right. It won't hang with a CCV though.

Thats what I like to hear! Im not really a Mesa guy but the Voodoo mod made it alot different and enjoyable to play. I don't really have any complaints about my amp other than its a "one trick pony" and Im a gear head thats been hearing awesome stuff about Mark's work. My band is gonna be recording our album soon and I want to use a CCV on it.
What pick ups sound good with it? Im currently running Emg's in my live rig.
this is true, high output pickups are great when u have a classic style amp like a plexi where there isnt much gain by todays standards on tap and the h O pickups help to push the amp into od.steve_k":3ghvz90r said:_slave_":3ghvz90r said:From experience, a CCV will run circles around any Dual Wreck, stock or modded and kick it to the curb. You will get a lot of opinions here. I doubt EMG's would be the optimum pick up for the amp. It has a lot of gain, so the last thing you need to do is hit it with actives or any other pick ups with high impedance ratings. For my money, I would stay with HB's that are fairly tame, like a 59/JB combination or something in the standard wound, 10-12 range. You really don't need high end PU's that boast of increased mids, or big bottom end, etc. The amp can do the work for you.

EMG's are nice but I find them to be a little sterile. Im looking for a more organic sound.

Judging from your avatar, I am going out on a limb here and assuming you play ESP's? Thin body or an Eclipse type?

This is my story:
I had a friend that used to buy and sell a lot of amps news & used. One of his amps was a Dual Rectifier that sound so articulated & tight(he bought used) that I say to myself I want to have that sound...so I save money & bought the Dual Rectifier in 1998 but went it arrived it didn't feel the same so I went to my friend house I put them side by side and my Dual didn't match that sound so I thought it could be the tubes I did chage them & make difference but never ever match the tightness & definition of his amp. So ask him & he told me that it probadly was modified but he didn't know who did it, also he used to have amps like marshall & others but with an amazing sound that when I go to the store the I listen them the one in the store suck. At that time 1998 I did search Internet for amp mod but the only thing that came up was Torres Engineer that sell MOD kit for Fender. I called them if the modify Mesa Rectifier & they told why you want to modify that amp I explain them this story but they told me that they don't modify Rectifier..... Anyway I spent a lot time doing research and I found nothing so I gave up. Then through the years now and then I google amps mod till I found Voodoo amps MOD so read every in their site & the description of the sound was really what I was hearing at my friend amps....so I say to myself I think I found the place & sent the amp....cost me a lot in shipping..... I went with the Deluxe MOD that include the transformers & other stuff like a push-pull for more gain(the use one of the bass), and other buttom for tighness (they use the slave buttom at the back).......when it arrived and plugged .........Drums please...........voila!!!! was the sound I was looking......I will not describe the sound because in their website they have plenty of description and sound clips.....apart from that I took out the Voodoo from sticker that says "this amps was modify by Voodoo..." so when my friends go to my home the are like guessing what the hell does this amps have so that is my secret......in fact one of my friend bought a rectifier because of my sound & he got frustrated because he cannot get my sound & he thinks is because my recto was made in 1998 & blah, blah,,, I know this is selfish....everyone want their secret sound......
