Can a high-quality compressor act as a buffer?

Can a high-quality compressor such as a Keeley, being on all the time, with the compression set very low, act as a buffer for the rest of the chain?

I mean, once you turn on a pedal after your first buffer, it effectively eliminates the effect of the first buffer on the rest of the chain after the pedal that was turned on. Right?

Jeff or Bruce can give a a better answer, BUT......................

most(if not all) NON-true-bypass pedals actually ARE buffers when the effect is NOT engaged. I'm almost sure this applies to Boss all pedals.

BTW, the signal out of the compressor might be "buffered", assuming it has a low impedence signal coming out.

The reason I'm asking is because all my pedals are true-bypass and I'm trying to figure out what to put in beginning of the chain as a buffer. I'm running out of space.

My options:
- ToneFreak BuffPuff
- MI Audio Boost N Buff
- Wampler Buffer
- Lehle Sunday Driver

Or running a clean pedal on all the time, such as a Keeley Compressor with the compression down. I can roll it up when I need it.

What happened to the Axess buffer? Not all buffers are created equal. That one sounds phenomenal.

I'd buy it without hesitation. Mario at Axess told me he's out of them at the moment. :( So, I'm looking for options.

I'm running out of space on the board, so running something underneath my pedaltrain would be a great idea. I found the Wampler Clean Buffer... At 2.5" x 3.5" it might very well fit under there.

Bob Bradshaw says the MXR CAE line booster/buffer is the same level/quality buffer as what he uses in his custom routers and stuff.

so, you could prob find one of these for like $75.

Or, this for about $35. I have one, and love it.  Made in Japan, supplies power, switch actually A/B's the two outs. perfect for you tuner or multi amp setup.

I dunno... I'd keep the compresser as an "effect" and not on all the time.

If you have the amp set right, and your playing dynamics are on, you don't need a compressor on all the time.

I'd *try* to get a buffer...

Ok, buffer it is...!

Gene, thanks for the recommendation of that MXR one. I'll search for it right now...

Can anybody tell me anything about the Wampler Buffer? I like the fact that it's small and I can put it under my board like I would do with the Axess one.

That wampler is the size of the MXR, but no switch. That might be a great option if you want to have it stashed underneath your board, and have it always on.

The only issue is where would you plug in?

Might have to run a 1/4" male to 1/4" female OUT of the input of the Wampler, and secure it somewhere to the board frame, to plug into.

Nick: The Wampler is actually slightly wider but shorter than an MXR case. If the height is the same as an MXR case, I can put it under the Pedaltrain board with the input sticking out the side. The output can then feed back up through the board and into the first pedal in the chain.

I'd question his measurement specs. I think he estimated wrong.
There's only so many sizes of those Aluminum housings made, and by the looks of it, it looks EXACTLY like an MXR size.

Look at a business card... and add a half inch to the width. Now look at the pic of that clean buffer. Definitely not a match... I'd call him to confirm those specs. Just to be safe.

How soon do you need it? Is it an emergency? When is Mario going to have more?

I havent heard these other ones but Id hold out for the Axess. Its phenomenal.

It seems it's going to take forever. He's been out of them for a while, and after talking through him by email, it didn't seem he was going to get 'em anytime soon.

Oh! I found a very good option, and the price is right. And even with the footswitch, I can stick it under my board with the input off to the side of the board. This is something I won't be ever switching on and off, so the fact that the switch is under the board doesn't matter. I can always reach down and switch by hand if I ever want to do that...

This guy's got a good rep for making interesting high-quality boxes. Here it is:

MI Audio Boost n Buff!!!!

It's a great pedal. It's a high quality buffer when not in use, and a boost when turned on.
