Y'know, it's funny...I'm as big of an EVH fan as anyone and I haven't even tried to cop that tone yet (even though I have tried with every other amp I have owned).

Are you talking 1978 variac'd Marshall Plexi era? Or any Eddie tone?

I DID play "The Dream is Over" on the EG5 when I got it, which, I would say, is well within the ballpark of the tone he had on that song (hands not included, of course).

Curious about this too, more the early tone is what I favor. "Beautiful Girl," that kind of thing.

Great topic.

I actually just sorta moved on from the Brown sound about a year ago. I haven't really tried getting the VH sound with my Egnater stuff.  I'm sure it wouldn't be hard.

vintagey bridge bucker + vintagey high gain Marshall sound + some delay + some killer technique = pretty close.

I'm guessing an SL2 could do okay.

the dream is over?

i said van halen, not wham :D

vh went into hibernation from 1985 till last year when roth rejoined, afaic
the sleeveless nose with hair years, and the nanny nanny boo boo boy from VH3 doesn't count at all.

cabo wabo, standing on top of the world, finish what you started.....wow those really get the heart racing :student:

i'd predict SL2 or SL...the speakers and the pickup would make or break the dealio.

I guess I better keep my cover of "How Many Say I" on the shelf then. ;)

I love both the Dave and Sam eras. "Dream is Over" just has SICK tone on it IMO.

I used to have a Splawn Pro Mod and I don't think anything will ever get closer to the Dave-era tones than that thing. Never played an SL2 but I'm sure it would be the best choice.

I think the SL w/ a pedal could probably get you there, too, though. Or even a waaaay backed off EG5.

Once I get actual recording equipment (ie not my computer mic) I'll be glad to post clips.

i'll need more time with my TOL 100 but i'm thinking ch 3 could be a sleeping brown giant.

Thanks Pat. I actually have a '76 Marshall cab now with blackbacks... might work a lot better. I guess I dig 75s because that's what 99% of the cabs I've owned since the mid 80s had in em. :)

On a side note, man I so want a Brown Module modded by you! Is there any other modules you can mod to get that tone of your modded brown module? They are SOOO hard to find. One was on ebay and unfortunately I didn't get it. Please let me know, as I am really wanting one of those :).

The Plexi can be modded to get awful close... email me at okstrat@cox.net and we can figure something out.

Me too! I think I've tried all the Celestion speakers, but always go back to the G12T-75's.

There's nothing like a quartet of old well broken in 75's.

Do the GT 75's lean more towards V30's or greenbacks, a combination or....... neither?

Niether really. 75's have a very modern sound with a punchy midrange and go very loud without breaking up. V30's have the upper mid hump w/a somewhat woofy lowend and greenbacks have a woody sound with an early breakup. To my ears 75's are in their own place tonally.
