So far I'm loving the Twin Jet, but what I noticed right out of the box was how fizzy the tone was. It didn't surprise me to see the Chinese preamp tubes when I opened it up, so last night I spent a little time playing around with some different combinations.

I didn't have a lot to work with, but what I ended up with was a Tung-Sol ECC803-S in V1, RCA 12AX7A in V2 and V3, chinese in V4 and V5, and Tung-Sol 12AX7 reissue in V6. Sound was much improved, with better bass response, less fizz, and overall better tone.

Anyone find other combinations that work well?

I'm very interested in this as well for when I get my Uber. So if anybody has any recommendations/suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I personally like Chinese tubes. High gain, low noise, don't "color" the tone of the amp too much, not too expensive.... I think that may be why a lot of amp builders use them, then they just voice their amp around them.

 I like the idea of this thread coming to life...

Can an owner of a new TJ swap out the current KT88's for EL34's? Is this doable, is this recommended, is this easy, or is this considered absolute blasphemy by the demigods of The Mighty Bog?

Oh please....DO tell.... :poke:

I'd imagine it's just a resistor....just not sure which one or what you'd replace it with! I'm sure Bogner would inform you, but probably at the cost of voiding the warranty. Not that they'll ever break!

So it ain't just a matter of swapping 'em out and re-biasing... It's a hardware adjustment as well. Drats.

As mentioned, perhaps I'll just love the KT88's and say SO LONG to my long time love affair with EL34's. I've ALWAYS had an EL34 head at my disposal in the studio. With the old Uber gone, and the new one coming - this won't be the case...

I am sure I'll survive.

Um... In response to my previous worries about KT88's versus the tried and trusted El34's...

KT88's ROCK!

FURTHER to my new found love of these brilliant KT88's... I am interested in knowing who does what with their TJ Uber's preamp tubes. I know, I know - the Chinese tubes are low noise and don't color and are cheap... But something about having them in my brand new TJ makes me feel as though I've got regular low grade fuel in my Lamborghini!! There's GOT to be something sweeter to jam in there... Not not to fear, this isn't geekdom over musicianship, this is just a question I am certain most of you ask too.

And secondly, what of the stock KT88's compared to say....Gold Lions or the like?

Peace,
V. :rawk:
