Can you explain how to learn songs (metal content)

how do you hear the chords that are being played?

like, i dont even care about the solo
but how the hell do you actually "hear" the chords being played:

ok, so from what i know, they tune to D-Standard, and use just Major power chords
like i don't think they use minor chords or 7th chords, or anything fancy like that

listen for the root. Go from there. then listen for any augmentation they do from the base chord itself.
