So I messin around in the sound studio/cave/garage/storage   And decided to do the cap switcharoo on the EG3/4.First the 250 and really liked it but it really starts to get in SL2 territory, mind you I had the SL2 in to A/B and it.It doesn't have as much bite or grit to it but to close.I then did the 500 and made the difference which gave it more of the EG3/4 flavor but not enough.I put it back to stock as I guess to me it just sounds better and retains all the qualities I loved about it.All in all, every cap sound fuckin insane but I just like it the way it is :D

I'm actually gonna do this cap swap today or tomorrow.

We're looking to get 6" of snow here in NJ, so what better way to warm up than to cozy up beside a nice, hot....

soldering iron.

I'm probably gonna try the 500 first, then A/B it to the SL that I have, and see if they jive.

Blasphemy!!!

There has never been and never will be any need!!!! Stop this insanity right now.
:bleh:

Since I got my VX, ive actually switched back to the stock 1000pf cap, the VX covers the top end clarity so the Eg3/4 can go back to what it does best.

I made a video clip to compare the stock and modified EG3/4s

Jason, I had to dig this back up because I am going to be trying the SL2X mod on my EG3/4. Is your EG3/4 still stock? I agree it is great stock!

That video makes me realize how much fatter the stock version is. Anyone remember if the MHG module was even darker?

I think I'd like the stock EG with a tighter bass assuming it would not kill the lead voice.

Agreed - I like the stock one too. I'm not touching mine! LOL!

The MHG is different then the EG3/4, but I wouldn't say darker. It just feels different to me. Something in the midrange. I like the EG3/4 better when playing with another guitarist. MHG does work well in a trio though, it's a great sounding module. Listen to Scotts demo on YouTube of the MOD 100. He demos both. He really shows how great they both are.

I know that putting a 100pf instead of the 1000pf is a sacrelige, but DAMN, I love my EG3/4 with this mod.

It's totally a different flavor than it was originally intended for, but it is another GREAT flavor indeed, and different enough from the SL2 to keep both.

Yea, I love the MHG and I wonder if I could mod it to make it more upper mids, but the MHG is so good on its own. I am the only guitarist thus far in the band so.....I wish I still had one to compare to my EG3/4. I think the MHG sounded fatter - maybe.

I agree, the EG3/4 only needs a tighter bottom in my opinion. Right now I have a 500pF cap in the tube board and it added highs but I think I prefer the lead voice with it at 1000.

I have a switch on my Randall Modern that shifts the mid voicing...sounds awesome..I bet that could be done to the MHG....30 minute job once you've worked out the right cap(s) I'd guess.

Did you do the mid shift yourself? I might like that on my Randall XTC as well. But, I might try to pick up a Randall Modern since it is essentially the Randall version of the MHG.

Guys, a cap job sounds so dirty.

This was the entire concept behind the EG5, if you've already owned and sold that mod then you won't like it.

For me the EG5 was too strident and I couldn't make use of the gain. HOwever, I got along with the MHG.
I now think I prefer the SL2 or EG3/4 but I also have a highly modded Randall Ultra XL, that with some tweaking could sound like the MHG if I wanted. Right now it sounds like the EG5 or very darn close, but I find the gain more usable.
