My dad builds tube amps here in Nashville and he's an old fender kinda guy, anyway we've been working together on modding my carvin v3. First of all we did a gain mod that worked really well and then I bought a new set of tubes recomended by dougs tubes. Anyway, the amp sounds way better but I am still lacking a really tight focased sound.. Just curious what else I might b able to do to tighten up the distorton and make the amp more crunchy.. I have all of the distortion I want now, I am just looking to tighten up the distortion.. Any help would be great..

Eq In the loop and Tube Screamer up front (Maxon or Keeley), Also Cermaic magnet guitar pickups would be the biggest one!

Check out Bareknuckles Cold Sweats, Miracle Main or For Insane tightness Painkiller

Wooowww, that is FUZZY.

EQ in the loop, try out a few different pedals to use as a clean boost to tighten in up. And bring down that treble, big time!

I was thinking more like an eq mod or something like that.. Any Ideas?

don't bring up your presence past 1 or 2 on that amp, hated the presence control on the V3

I liked the thick setting best

Hey I'm curious to know what you've done to your V3. You can try to replace your Output transformers and add a choke. I got in touch with Paul Patronete of Mercury Magnetics about installing new transformers in mine and this is what he had to say.

If you want the ability to run four EL34 tubes or four 6L6 type tubes in the amp, then use the MMO-100M output. This OT has the higher primary impedance that can be used with either type of tube.

We supply a wiring diagram with the OT. It does not show you how to wire it to the amp but it does show you what the taps on the OT are. The choke replaces a resistor in the power supply section. I do not know which resistor. You’ll have to look at the schematic of the amp to determine which one needs to be replaced with the choke. A qualifier tube amp tech can tell you very quickly.

Best,

Paul @ MM

I haven't tried it yet but I've had a JCM2000 and a krank chadwick amp both with Mercury Magnetics transformers and I'm a total believer about what they say and what it does to your amp. You can try new tubes all day long if you'd like, but new MM transformers make a huge difference in tone and really making things stand out and come alive. There's also a company called Heyboer transformers they to may have something. I think thats what cameron uses in his amps. Not 100% positive, but judging from the youtube video @ Namm that's what I could make out. Again I'd like to know what you've tweaked to your amp? Contact me if you don't mind.

Thanks!
