Changing the voicing of the Eini by changing the knobs?

finding the sound

New member
Hi everybody,
I'm in love with the tone of my Eini but can't dial it to get a good voicing when recording without having a lot of equing going on my ssl channel, wich result in a less naturel sound, as I prefer getting close to sound I want with the amp alone and add some reasonable little cut and bump later.

So, I've seen some dudes mod their third channel recto presence knob to get a sound similar to their second channel, and I thought that maybe, it would be cool to tailor the Eini to my needs (= DropB tuning/modern metal voicing).

I know there's other electronics part going on, but I love the tone and want to keep it, I just want to be able to dial it better with more suited knob for me.

Hence my question to Master Peter Diezel:

Can you give us a list of the pots rating (for exemple: 25K for the presence ect...) for the VH4, Herbert, and Eini, so we can test different kind of mods?

It would be really, really awesome. Thank you!

While you are awaiting Peter's response, let me just say that I use the comp out on my Einstein, and try to get the sound I want by using slightly less gain then I would live, and setting the dials closer to 12 o'clock and then refine the tone from there by slightly tweaking the dials.

Good luck, I hope you get the answer you are seeking.

It´s not possible to change easily the value of a pot,
because it will cause a disfunction of the whole
circuit.

Thank you C-4.
I know the "lower gain trick" and use it when recording layers of guitars, and generally i put the setting at 12 o'clock too, but go a little far on the presence, deep, and treble knob.
Excuse my poor english, but do you mean you use a stomp box comp before the amp or do you compress after micing the cab? I don't get what you wrote.

Ok, thank you Peter.
So it's hard to change the value of the pot, but is it doable by a tech?
Maybe there's just one or two caps or resistors to change to make it?
To be more precise I'm looking to match the equing of 5150 on the 3 mode of channel 1 of my Eini, cause this amp sit easily in the mix, but I want to keep the tone of my eini.

Just to know, what kind of disfunction would induce the change of some pots? Is it dangerous or just change the way other modes react?

Please don´t change the pots, they affect each other.
What are You looking for ? Maybe more cut through on
the distortion channels ? Please tell me the serial number
of Your Einstein.

In fact I can't achieve good balance, I'm missing cutting highs and got to much low mids around 400/500Hz.
I'm turning the presence to full + a little boost at 1,5K and 5K, while cutting lot's of 900/1Khz and 300/400Hz on my channel strip.
I'm working only with the 3 mode of channel 1 to get a EVH kind of tone, and have a fender for clean sounds, so if a mod change other channels I don't care. It's only for recording use.

Thank you a lot for your help.

I think the lows are a bit difficult to get right too, but that's related to the low mids I think.
Besides, I may screw up on the eq'ing test, I may use a shelf for boosting all the highs from 1,5KHz to 10KHz (where I put a High Filter) at the place of the boost at 1,5K and 5K and put down the presence a bit...
