So I kinda want a So-Cal Charvel. I really want a white one, but the USA model only comes in green currently. Has anyone compared the Pro Mods to the USA production series? They seem to be the same other than country of origin aren't they?

I have a Pro-Mod So-Cal and have played a USA. There is no diff in playability imo... The pro-mod actually had better fretwork than the USA I played....

I can't imagine there is any real world difference. I think the JPN ones have a different neck finish, but that is about it.

heard alot of people cant tell a difference - nothing that stands out to them anyway but this is general heresay of asking around.

Nothing but good things have been said about the Pro-Mods in comparison to it's USA counterparts. I've played them myself, and found them to be just as well built. Not to mention, you get the nice hardshell case with them. If I were you, I'd go with the Pro-Mod.

Nothing different except the J's have rolled fretboards. They both are awesome and I too want the white one to go with my US SoCal. They come with an awesome hard case too, clearly a great buy.
Edit: I get to pick up my SoCal today, I had a push/pull coil tap volume pot and black phase mini toggle put in. Friggin sweet. Just bragging. :D

The pro mods are the same as the USA production model series (including the So-Cal). Just different designs with guards. The 2004-05 USA standard Charvel run (e.g., pointies) are much better constructed than the pro models. I've owned both, and my 2005 pointy was just better quality all the way around. I also own a custom shop as well, and it's no comparison to the pro mod either, but it's double/triple the price. However, the USA pro mods are good guitars if you can get them for $600-$700 used.

I bought my USA Pro-mod used, for $700. To me, if you don't care about where your guitar is made, go for the Japanese Charvel. I like the idea of USA Charvels, and think the USA models will be worth more down the road, since they only made them for a few years.

If you look hard enough, you can buy them new for that.

If anybody knows,Chub would know, since he's the Charvel King.
Maybe he has some at his store?

Thanks for all the replies. I probably will end up getting a white MIJ one just to have the color I want and a case, but part of me does like seeing Made in USA on the headstock.

We were a USA Production dealer since the beginning and now we sell the made in Japan Pro Mods and the USA Custom Shops. The Japanese ones seem to be just as good of guitars in every way as the USA Pro Mods were. They do seem to have a different type of oil finish on the neck, but it is still an oil finish. I just feel that the necks need some #0000 steel wool taken to them to smooth them out. I've been doing that to every one we ship out.

I am waiting for a Ferrari red San Dimas for myself to keep and play. The red has been on backorder for 2 months but should be here very soon. I think it is going to look bitchin once I do a couple of mods to backdate it. It's going to look just like an '82 Charvel. If you guys have questions about them, please PM me and we can talk about it.
