I'm pretty sure it's very rare they're like this, but I found it pretty amusing.

That guitar has always looked extremely cheap to me. The finish looks especially terrible.

Ahhhhhh.....you really think that fret job left like that? Nobody noticed that?

Did someone buy it like that? If so, they must have gotten it through online.

Yeh, somebody bought it like that. It ended up getting exchanged.

If that's how it left the factory... That's not an oversight, that's a disgrace... :gethim:

I'm not much of guitar guy, so I'm not 100% sure what's wrong here, but it looks like the frets are almost glued on to the fretboard rather than being stuck into it like they're supposed to be... is this correct?

No, they're installed fine, just not finished. A luthier would crown them a little and polish 'em up, when they're setting up new frets, they take them down a little, this is also done with the neck under simulated tension, the reason for this is to compensate for any slight irregularities in the fretboard shape and profile or relief. The 'perfect' neck shape is obtained through the finishing of the fret tops. ALSO - the frets should not extend past the fretboard as we see in this example, they should be filed and polished smooth with the edge or you will almost certainly cut your hand or fingers on them. that's what I meant when I said "ouch....."

Oh man my bad, the things are not even crowned

I thought by the first pic there was some stupid neck shrinkage, that guitar never went through fret dressing :scared:

Ohh I see now. Looking at my guitar, and then looking at this, I can totally tell the problems with the frets now. Uuhhgg, how does this happen? Stupid Koreans...

I was checking out some Gibsons at the local GC and at least half of them had frets sticking out the sides of the fb. I would run my hand down the neck and some were so bad I was sure the frets were going to draw blood. Now I might let this slide on a cheap import guitar but these were expensive USA Gibsons! :scared:

We had the same problem at the shop where I used to work.
The owner was too cheap to keep the temp and climate where the guitars needed it to be.
So in the winter, all the necks shrunk(except a few of the PRS), and he had to pay our repair guy to come in and file down the fret ends on all of 'em.
It's kinda hard to sell somebody a guitar when it's painful to play.

I think the main problem here is the lack of crowning. The ends don't look too horrible(not good either) and would benefit from the crowning too. The flatness of the top of the frets is hilarious. Don't these all come with an "inspected by" sticker with initials on it? How could this possibly leave the factory?

First off, welcome poster above.

Next, yeah - the lack of fret finishing is evident. Mark, have you seen a Loomis in real life? It looks a lot better than pretty much all the pictures you see on the internet in my opinion.

the fret work on Gibson's has always been poor. I have literally played thousands of Gibson's. You would think a guitar that sell's for over $2000 would have a good fret job.
