So my friends tm 2x12 sounds great, and once I get my 2 1x12s I may try those speakers in my caa 2x12 as well to see how the sound. I've only ever played with v30s, so how would you compare the egnater classic lead 80s. Are they far different from the regular classic lead 80s?

Bruce posted about this over on The Gear Page. Apparently the Eggy80s are special run Celestion Classic Lead 80s with an enhanced low end.

He said it would be almost impossible to tell them apart, unless you're doing a a/b taste test kind of scenario.

I played a Tourmaster 2x12 at GC the other day. I'm a V30 man thru and thru, but this thing sounded really, really great. Huge tight low end, detailed high, no mid spike.

V30's make me puke.

I like all variations on the CL80 thus far. Killer speaker!

Why do V30's make you puke?

What do you like about the CL80's that make them better?

I've never played a cabinet with CL80's, so I am curious.

I'm not a fan of V30's either. They have an upper mid-range that just makes my ears hurt. I can't stand them either. The best speakers I've found so far for Egnater is CL80's or G12K100's. For me V30's start to get really brash and brittle the louder they get. CL80's tend to get a little mushy on the low end w/ modules like the EG5 though, which is why I like the G12K100's. The low end is super tight, and the mids are really buttery. They have a slightly more chimey and sparkly top end also. All in all, the G12K100's are my favorite speaker so far in nearly every cabinet I've put them in.

The CL80's are great though, because they have a good, well balanced spectrum of frequencies. No frequency spikes like V30's. For me, every amp that goes through a vintage 30 really loses "its sound." CL80's and G12K100's really do a good job at letting the amp be "itself" rather than conforming to the typical sound of a V30.

Eric!

Any experience with Celestion

Stonehenge
and/or
Blue or Gold Alnico's

Thanks

Well what about speakers like the warehouse v30, they say it's liek a v30 without the spike, so that sounds a lot like what you guys are describing in your cl80s?

I can tell what you mean by the v30 spike, but so far it's sounded great with the egnater, but am curious about trying out different speakers, now that I know that I've found the right amp for me. I think that spike though does help cut live. With my recto it made it a bit too honky, but so far with the egnater i don't have that problem.

1x12s should be shipping by end of this week, let's see when they arrive so I can test them out. Any more speaker recommendations are more than welcome!

My amp room might make me biased, but I can name about 8-10 other speakers that sound more pleasing at low or high volumes at close or far distances with bright or dark amps.

The V30 in any cab I've tried has never failed to make me say, "WTF is wrong with my amp? Why does it sound so fucking bad????" It's an in-your-face brittle crappy sound. UGH, I fucking hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I'm sure a REALLY good sounding room can make any speaker sound good, but not mine!.

Even the WGS V30 (which is a huge improvement over the real thing) still can't sound right in this room.

THe CL80 is thick, clean, smooth, and flat. IMO, it maximizes the capability of any amp through it.

I can't preach this enough.

speakers I like:

evm12L
EV Force 12
Emi P50E
Weber 1265
Weber Ceramic Blue 12
Celestion 12t75
WGS BR80
Celestion CL80

pretty much anything besides the V30

I wonder why Bruce & team would pick the v30's for the egnater GC line. maybe because of market popularity?

I have the 4x12 straight and slant GC cabs. When I listen ten feet away i,m not too happy experiencing the same kind of issues. When I stand directly in front its warmer.

Frank just sent some tone bras I have not put on yet so we shall see.

Also, I remember Bruce saying (Maybe on TGP? I couldn't find it here. Forgive me if I'm wrong.) that he feels CL-80s don't sound that great in 4x12 cabs but sound great in 1x12 and 2x12 cabs. I think the V30s are the first speaker most guitar players go to when looking to upgrade from stock speakers in Marshall cabs, G12T-75s.

The only speakers I own are the Warehouse versions of the V30 and CL-80, the Veteran 30 and British Lead 80. I just put the BL80s in my 2x12 and the Vet30s are in my 4x12. I'll be seeing how the BL80s sound tomorrow night at a gig and I need more time on the 4x12 to do any more comparing, but the differences between these two cabs are monumental so I'm not sure if the Pepsi Challenge would really be valid.

Thank you for the detailed description!
I have 2 Egnater 4x12's not TM's that came with V30's because that's what Bruce & Frank recommended and have always been very happy with them. Before I bought the Egg cabs I was using a Marshall 1960AV & 1960BV. The Egnater Cabs fill up a room and project the sound so much better.

no doubt they sound way better IMO than a stock Brand name 4x12's, however
I am hearing a fizzyness / high end / not so great "Feel thing to the ear" that Eric brought to attention in his posts.
