Clip, listen and tell me if it's better, no drums though.

Thanks man

The whole thing with the amp sound degrading after 20-30 minutes really makes it hard finding the sweet spot micing. Fired it up and she sounded somewhat her old self so I did it as quick as I could, I think I'm getting better at it. This sound even sits in a drum mix nice, I just have to get me some drums made up again, lost the last track I had made up, deleted the wrong thing, heh.

Single SM57 into a M-Audio Pro Fire 610 into Pro Tools M-powered.

Treb 3 o'clock, mid-2 o'clock, bass- 2 o'clock, channel volume- 11:00 o'clock, gain- 2 o'clock, presence- 2:30, deep- 2 o'clock. Flat technically speaking for the most part except for pres and treb boosts.

Sounds fat .... for the band mix maybe You will need more mids.

Thanks Peter,

I think it's actually something with my VH4. Ever since UPS did whatever they did to sink the Output Transformer into the chassis it's been acting weird, mids and highs get muffled/lost and after I cool it down and play again it's fine. Just now I had something even weirder happen, when messing with the EQ again I started to play and the channel three LED started blinking like it was on mute, still played but got fuzzy. I then switched it over to channel one and back again and it was normal. THAT was weird, never had that happen. Any idea what that might be Peter?

Just looking at your settings I can say that your VH4 sounds the way it should in the mids recorded with a 57, this is not to say that you are not having issues with it. I think you are having some serious loss of the low end, with that amount of bass & deep you should have a LOT of bass, which you don't. Don't be afraid to push those mids, go 3-4:00 & listen, maybe even more. There is a spot, it's a matter of really small tweaking, but once you find it you'll know.

I had my Herbert's mids at 4 o'clock, so I'm definitely not afraid to go that high, only problem is it gets boxy and congested with this mic for some reason. It cut's like a knife and has lot's of mids in the room... until it acts up, that's the part that's pissing me off. If I had another SM57 to mic the mid area of the cone I think it'd fill out more and be more like what's coming out of it. I mean I dunno  . It still doesn't sound like it did the first day I got it, it had more mids and cut and actually I don't remember the mid range getting boxy either now that I think of it.

Could it be possible that you had new speakers in your cab & now they are broken-in & sound less cutting?

I wouldn't worry about a second mic. I'm sure with the right placement & amp settings you'll be fine. If you are serious about the whole recording thing, I'd suggest looking at an SM7B instead.

Speakers were broken in before I got the VH4. Had them for 6 months at master volume levels of up to 11 o'clock with a Herbert during 3 hour rehearshals 3 times a week, a few outdoor gigs, and a little tour. Should be good to go I'd imagine. I know one thing the VH4 with mids where they are now, at 2 o'clock, was almost the same as the Herbert's at 4 o'clock. At least it was that way when I first got it. Doesn't seem so much that way now, especially after UPS played soccer with it, it just gets claustrophobic.

I don't know man, you are there, you should be a better judge. All I can tell is that amps sound different due to weather, tubes, how old the tubes are & all that shit, including your ears. Try to take the amp out of the shell, turn it around so you can see the inside & kinda wave if from side to side & shit like that. Try to see if you have something loose inside, maybe a loose connection or something. Like I said, your clip sounds like the low end on your amp is altered. Do you have some spare power tubes? It would be worth trying a new set before you decide that it's the amp to blame.

I am told by UPS that I will hear from them tomorrow on the situation. Let's keep our fingers crossed. When I know something concrete I will call you.

I just recorded a new clip, volume was kinda just louder than speaking but I think it's better this time. It's the mic a bit back one. Seriously amp's got something wrong with it though. 20-30 minutes and wham, turd city.

Later buddy,

-Nick

Edit: Terry posted while I did, had to put a quote in there so I made sure I was talking to the right person.
