Hi all, just got my Axe Fx Ultra, I have a diezel herbert , now in the back there are 3 types of input as far as the effects loop goes. Serial, Parallell and Switched, which one do I hook it up to ? sorry you have a rookie here, whichever one I choose I use the send on of the amp to the input of the effects loop and the output of the effects loop to the return of the amp correct ? but which one do I use ? any help would be greatly appreciate it, cheers guys

left pic: AxeFX as FX unit only, use either the switchable serial send and return or the permanent serial S/R

right pic: 4 cable method, run alternativly AxeFX preamp + FX or Herbie preamp + AxeFX FX into Herberts power section.
Use the "FX-Loop" patches on the Axe, read Axe Forum for hints about the levels. With channel 2 and 3 of Herbert you'll get hiss though due to the difference of levels of the Axe's Output 2 and Herberts guitar in.

I've tried to use the Axe-Fx with my Herbert with the 4-cable-method, too. At first I got the usual problems with hum and noise especially on the distortion channels.

Then I bought two units : the Ebtech Hum Eliminator and the Ebtech Line Level Shifter. Using these units I got a very convincing result.

I used the Hum Eliminator to get rid of the ground loop between the Herbert's FX loop and the Axe-Fx and the Line Level Shifter to match the line level output of the Axe-Fx to the instrument level input of the Herbert. This way the added noise you get is minimized.

However I went back to using the Axe-Fx only in the FX loop since I like it simple ;)

Hope that helped a bit.

I just stick to my little delay and flanger out front. I get worried about FX loops, level matching, volume cut, MIDI program patches and everything else when playing live. Tap dancing is a drag too, so I keep it simple.

so if there's noise, hiss and hum, doesn't the Axe Fx noise gate take care of that ? or can you just buy an ISP Decimator Pro and take care of that ?
Cheers
thanks for all the inputs.

Most of the time, I have found that if you got some noise like that, a Decimator or anything else won't get rid of it. Gates and Hush's, just mute however you adjust the threshold limits. To me, you are just adding another tone sucker in the signal path. Don't get me wrong, they are fine for their intended purpose, but at normal volumes, covering up ground loop hum and white noise with a suppressor is not the way to go. You have paid $4K for an amp and $2K for an AFX. Now, you are considering covering up unwanted noise with a $100 box and miss loads of sweet tones.

What was said earlier with the impedance matching is likely the better fix when using it. Find the source of the hum and fix that, not cover it up and you will be a much happier player. If I am trying out something new and get noise, it usually goes back in the box and in the closet.

Hey Steve, thanks man, it's a good thing you pointed it out. cheers

4 cable method is often the best way to have hiss/hum noise.
A simple eventide eclipse in the loop and a budda wha preamp? ;)
