Ill start by saying I already have a Univalve and its awesome. I had it running on a single EL-84 the other day and it kept up great volume wise at a jam session. However, I could use more versatility. Knowing that THD has awesome tone, I though a flexi might be the answer. I cant really find out the info I want.

Im playing hard/heavy rock. Think Dokken/Europe levels of gain. Ideally I need a channel switcher, one clean channel, one dirt that can get the 80s high gain without a boost. I cant work out if the flexi does this?

Secondly, the sound I am after really sits with the John Norum tone. Marshally, heavy, great bass response yet clear sounding. I know he uses JCM800 2205s with KT-88s. Is this something the Flexi can achieve, or would I be better off hunting down a 2205?

If anyone has some rock clips (riffs, not leads!) please could they post them?

Checkout the clips section of my website. There are Flexi clips there.

Thanks Bob, forgot you did some flexi clips. Some happening tone right there! You still got it? If not, why?!

DAMN BOB

Your Flexi 50 clips absolutely ROCK

was that straight in or you using a boost pedal of some sort ?

Yeah Bob made me curious about the Flexi to but in the end I duoubt it would have to aggressiveness I typically go for. Still would love to try one someday. Sounds like a great rock amp judging by the clips.

From a popularity stand point, I think the Flexi is one of the most underrated amps out there. Its an amp thought I always forget about but would love to own.

When I got my Flexi I was chasing the dragon (someone elses tone). I have owned several classic Marshalls (800's and older)and there is something to them. None were as full sounding as the Flexi. I like my Bivalve but to me the Flexi is the amp. I like it better than any amp I have played. Dynamics and harmonics play a huge roll in the way I play. I have run KT-66 in it most of the time the last few years. As for channel switching I use my Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe It has a volume control on it. Any pledal with a volume well work, you could put a 500/250 k pot or two in a Hammond box with a foot switch. The Flexi sounds great with the volume control from the guitar to get cleaner tones.

FWIW I owned a 2205 for 15 years, and while they can sound awesome, don't expect to pick one up and plug in a couple tubes and get that sound. First the earlier years sucked, pre 87 I think- the info is out there on the Marshall history sites. The later ones had more gain and fixed a channel bleed through problem. IMO an EQ in the loop is a must - the tone controls suck - actually the treble needs to be on 0-2 for the amp to sound good - there is /was a site that had Michael Schenker's 2205 settings - they are a great base to start with. The amp sounds WAY better with the master vol turned up for some reason the circuit has a problem - Mark Cameron confirmed it. I used a FX processor in the loop, and used the vol controls on that as my vol. Used a few other pedals as well.

In the end I got tired of all the pedals and crap, and bought a Cameron Superlead which sounds way better IMO than my 2205 ever did.

I dont think an EQ is neccessary with the 2205/2210's (depending on the sound you're going for :) ), but the trick with that amp is to always keep the boost channel volume on 10, and use the master for your overall volume. Although if the master is below 4, its not going to sound as thick.

That said Id take a Flexi over my 2210.
